Korean Dark Spot Treatment: Which Laser Fits Which Spot, by Depth

Freckles, sun spots and melasma sit at different depths of the skin, so each needs a different laser. Dr. Choi explains how a dermatologist chooses.

What is the right Korean dark spot treatment for my spots?

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, a board-certified dermatologist (M.D., Ph.D.) trained at Seoul National University Hospital and Chief Director of WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. This article is based on my YouTube video from June 2026 above, where I sort out the many pigment lasers people ask me about.

The right Korean dark spot treatment depends less on the laser's name and more on where the pigment sits in your skin. Spots on the surface, spots at the border with the deeper skin, and clusters deep inside it are different conditions, and each calls for a different tool.

So the first step is not choosing a laser. It is a dermatologist looking at your spots and deciding which layer they are in. Below I explain the three layers, the lasers that match them, and how to fit this into a trip to Seoul.

Freckles, sun spots or melasma: which layer is your pigment in?

We often call everything a "dark spot", but in dermatology these are separate diagnoses, sorted by anatomy. The skin has an outer layer (the epidermis), a deeper layer (the dermis), and a border between them.

  • Epidermis (surface): freckles, sun spots (lentigines) and flat seborrheic spots.
  • Epidermis–dermis border: melasma, where pigment builds up along the border and spreads above and below it.
  • Dermis (deep): clusters of pigment that look like blotches from the outside. Many of these are congenital or inherited marks.

Many faces have more than one type at once. That is why a single "spot laser" rarely suits everyone, and why I diagnose before I choose.

Which laser treats which spot?

For surface spots, we use a device that removes pigment in the epidermis. BBL is the typical example. At WELLS, freckles and sun spots are treated with BBL at 515 nm with strong cooling, set for your pigment and skin type; skin typically clears by around day seven.

For melasma at the border, we want a laser that passes through the surface and selectively removes the pigment below it. That is the picosecond laser. For deep clusters in the dermis, removal or surgery is often the first option, and long-wavelength pigment lasers can also be used.

In the video I was also asked about IPL and BBL. Strictly speaking, IPL is not a laser: it is intense pulsed light, a broad beam of light rather than a single wavelength. BBL is the best-known brand within the IPL family, which is why people sometimes use the two names as if they were the same thing.

How WELLS treats it

Melasma & Stubborn Pigment (Pico Toning)

What it is
Picosecond toning at 1064 nm and 755 nm for melasma, age spots (lentigo), nevus of Ota and ABNOM. Surface freckles and sun spots are treated with BBL at 515 nm.
How it works
Very short pulses with strong peak power break abnormal pigment into finer particles with less heat to the surrounding skin. The dermatologist first decides how deep your pigment sits, then chooses the wavelength.
Sessions
Set by the dermatologist at consultation. In Dr. Choi's analysis presented at the Korean Dermatological Association, about 5–7 picosecond sessions matched 10 conventional laser-toning sessions.
Recovery
Confirmed at consultation. After BBL for freckles and sun spots, skin typically clears by around day seven.
Price
Confirmed at consultation (₩, VAT excluded)

Why patients fly in for it

  • A board-certified dermatologist diagnoses the type and depth of each spot before any laser is chosen.
  • Both 1064 nm and 755 nm picosecond wavelengths, plus BBL for surface spots.
  • PicoSure has been used at WELLS since 2015, about 30,000 procedures so far.

PicoSure or 1064 nm pico: why we use both

Picosecond lasers come in two main types: 755 nm, best known as PicoSure, and 1064 nm. The longer 1064 nm wavelength travels a little deeper, so it suits melasma pigment sitting lower at the border; 755 nm suits pigment sitting a little higher.

Here is the honest part. No doctor can see by eye whether border pigment is slightly higher or slightly lower. So the safer approach is to combine both wavelengths, covering the whole range a picosecond laser reaches. That is how pico toning at WELLS is set up, at 1064 nm and 755 nm.

I presented a five-session analysis of combined pico laser melasma treatment at the Korean Dermatological Association meeting: results came more than 40% faster than conventional toning, about 5–7 picosecond sessions compared with 10 conventional laser-toning sessions. PicoSure itself has been used at WELLS since 2015, about 30,000 procedures so far.

Is laser toning a Korean dark spot treatment that works?

Laser toning is close to a symbol of K-beauty. About 15 to 20 years ago, dermatologists in Korea found that a 1064 nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, used at very low energy and spread evenly over melasma every one to two weeks, gradually faded it over 10, 15, 20 sessions. Before that, lasers were fired hard at pigment until it bled.

So laser toning is a method, not a machine: low energy, many repeats, until the skin turns faintly pink. Older toning used Q-switched lasers; today picosecond toning is the standard. Toning also has a known side effect when it is repeated for a long time, and I explain that in my next video, written up as laser toning side effects.

How do I plan Korean dark spot treatment on a Seoul trip?

Send a clear photo of your face in daylight, without makeup, and your travel dates on WhatsApp. From the photo we can often tell you whether your spots look like surface pigment, melasma, or a mix, and the dermatologist confirms the diagnosis and price at consultation.

Surface spots can often be handled within a short stay. Melasma is different: it is treated over several sessions, so we plan how many fit your trip and what to do between visits. If pigment keeps returning after toning, ask about MELA Triple Toning, our three-step melasma protocol, ₩770,000 (VAT excluded) per session.

WELLS is on the 8th floor of the Apgujeong Building, about five minutes on foot from Apgujeong Station (Line 3), Exit 3. Results vary from person to person, and the right plan is decided with your dermatologist.

Q&A

Questions about this video

Which Korean dark spot treatment suits freckles and sun spots?

Surface spots respond to a device that removes pigment in the epidermis. At WELLS this is BBL at 515 nm with strong cooling, and skin typically clears by around day seven.

What is the difference between PicoSure and a 1064 nm pico laser?

PicoSure is a 755 nm picosecond laser that suits pigment sitting a little higher; 1064 nm travels a little deeper. Because depth can't be judged by eye, WELLS pico toning combines both.

Is IPL the same as BBL?

IPL is intense pulsed light, not a laser. BBL is the best-known brand of IPL device, which is why the names are often used interchangeably.

How many sessions does melasma need?

It is set at consultation. In Dr. Choi's analysis, about 5–7 picosecond sessions matched 10 conventional laser-toning sessions.

This article explains general medical information from the video. It is not a diagnosis; results vary by person and are decided in consultation.
