Pico laser Korea: how to choose, how a visit works, and flight timing
Pico toning vs pico fraxel, how to choose a clinic in Seoul, how a visit works from WhatsApp to aftercare, and how sessions fit around your flights.

Pico laser Korea: what are you actually booking?
Hello, I'm Dr. Hyo Seop Ryu, a board-certified dermatologist (M.D., Ph.D.) and chief director at WELLS in Apgujeong. I trained and taught at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, where I was a clinical instructor and later an assistant professor of dermatology. This is how I would explain a pico laser visit to a friend before they booked flights.
If you are searching for a pico laser Korea trip, you have probably seen the word "pico" attached to melasma, dark spots, pores and even tattoo removal. The worry is usually the same: which pico treatment do I actually need, and can it be done properly in the days I have in Seoul?
"Pico laser" is not one treatment. It is a type of laser, and the same device can be used for gentle toning, for stubborn pigment, or in a fractional mode for texture. Choosing well starts with knowing which of those you are asking for.
What is pico toning, and how is it different from ordinary laser toning?
What is pico toning? It is low-energy, repeated laser treatment of pigment using picosecond pulses. Conventional laser toning fires in nanoseconds, a billionth of a second. A picosecond laser fires in a trillionth of a second, and our pico toning for melasma and stubborn pigment uses pulses 1,000 times shorter than laser toning, at 1064 nm and 755 nm.
That difference in speed changes how the pigment breaks. Ordinary toning works mainly through heat and tends to break pigment into "gravel". A pico toning laser works through a photomechanical effect, shattering pigment into something closer to sand, with less heat spreading to the skin around it.
Why does particle size matter? Large fragments are hard for the immune cells that clear pigment to engulf. Finer particles are generally cleared more easily through the lymphatic system, which is why pico laser toning can reach a result in fewer sessions.
There is data from our own clinic on this. My colleague Dr. Won Woo Choi presented a five-session analysis of combined pico laser melasma treatment at the Korean Dermatological Association meeting: results came more than 40% faster than conventional toning, about 5–7 picosecond sessions compared with 10 conventional toning sessions.
Which device do we use?
For pigment we rely on PicoSure Pro, a 755 nm picosecond laser. PicoSure Pro delivers over 40% more fluence than the original. It is FDA and KFDA approved.
The 755 nm wavelength reacts strongly with melanin and much less with blood vessels, so energy goes where the pigment is. We combine it with 1064 nm and 532 nm when black, blue or red pigment sits at different depths.
Pico toning vs pico fraxel: two different jobs
The second term people search is pico fraxel. A pico fraxel laser is the fractional mode of a picosecond laser, which we call Fractional Picosecond Laser Treatment. It is aimed at texture rather than colour: acne scars, enlarged pores and fine lines.
Fractional pico creates tiny optical breakdowns (LIOB) inside the dermis while leaving the surface almost untouched by heat. The skin answers those micro-injuries by making new collagen and elastin. There is no oozing and no dressing, and any redness usually clears in 3–4 days.
| Pico toning | Pico fraxel (Fractional Picosecond Laser Treatment) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main target | Melasma, sun spots, lentigo, nevus of Ota, ABNOM | Acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines |
| How it works | Short pulses break pigment into fine particles | Micro-cavities (LIOB) in the dermis trigger collagen renewal |
| After treatment | Washing and makeup are usually possible the same day | Any redness usually clears in 3–4 days |
| Price | Confirmed at consultation | Confirmed at consultation |
Many faces need a bit of both. That is a decision for the consultation, not the booking form, because the order and spacing matter.
Not sure whether you need pico toning, pico fraxel or both? Send a photo in daylight and tell me what bothers you most.
Send a photo, get a planHow to choose a pico laser clinic in Seoul
Searches for pico laser Seoul return a long list of clinics, and most menus look alike. I would judge them on diagnosis first, device second. In pigment treatment the doctor's reading of your skin matters as much as the machine.
Here is why. Pigment is usually a mix: melasma, freckles, nevus of Ota and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can sit on the same cheek. If melasma is mistaken for something else and over-stimulated, it can become darker, not lighter. I explain why we treat melasma gently in our Korean melasma treatment guide, so I will not repeat it here.
- Ask who examines your skin and who holds the laser — a dermatologist, or someone else.
- Ask which wavelength they plan to use for your pigment, and why.
- Ask how many sessions they expect and how far apart, before you pay for one.
- Ask how you can reach the clinic after you fly home.

How a pico laser visit works at WELLS
A korea pico laser visit with us follows four steps. None of them needs a translator: consultations at the clinic are available in English, and WhatsApp replies are in English.
1. Message us on WhatsApp
Send your concern, a photo if you like, and your travel dates. We reply with treatment options and available appointment times, so you arrive with a plan rather than a guess.
2. Dermatologist consultation
At the clinic a dermatologist examines your skin, reads the type and depth of the pigment, and confirms the plan and the price before anything starts. Listed prices are in Korean won and exclude 10% VAT.

3. Treatment
A pico session usually takes about 5–20 minutes depending on the area, and many people tolerate it without numbing cream, though pain varies from person to person. For melasma that has come back after toning before, I may suggest MELA Triple Toning: pico or Clarity toning, Potenza microneedle RF and a skin-brightening enzyme developed at WELLS with LDM, at ₩770,000 (VAT excluded) per session. Pico toning and PicoSure Pro on their own are priced at consultation.
4. Aftercare
You leave with the dermatologist's aftercare instructions, and you can reach us on WhatsApp after you are home. The clinic is on the 8th floor of the Apgujeong Building, a five-minute walk from Apgujeong Station Exit 3 (Line 3).
Tell us your dates and the pigment you want treated, and we will suggest a session plan before you book flights.
Plan my pico laser visitFitting a pico laser Korea trip around your flights
Pico laser toning is usually a course, not a single visit. Sessions are generally spaced 1 to 4 weeks apart, adjusted to how your skin responds. That shapes how I would plan a trip.
- A short trip: one consultation and one session, then a plan for whether further sessions make sense on your next visit.
- A longer stay of a few weeks: room for more than one session, with the interval set by the dermatologist.
- Pico fraxel: book it early in the trip rather than the day before your flight, since any redness usually takes 3–4 days to settle.
- Weekdays give you the most choice: we are open Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00 and Saturday 10:00–17:00, closed Sundays and public holidays.
For pico toning itself, daily life is rarely interrupted. Washing your face and wearing makeup are usually possible the same day, so a session can sit between other plans in Seoul.
Melasma is managed over time, and I am honest about that at the consultation. If the number of sessions you need will not fit one trip, we tell you before you start, and you can see all the options on our pigmentation and melasma treatments page.
Aftercare after pico toning, especially when you fly home
Skin is temporarily more vulnerable after any laser, so sunscreen is mandatory, not optional. Use SPF 30+ and PA+++ or higher even indoors or on cloudy days, and reapply every 2–3 hours when you are outside. A window seat on a long flight counts.
- Moisturise more generously than usual with a gentle hyaluronic acid or ceramide cream; the skin can feel dry while it renews.
- For about a week, avoid peels and scrubs, and pause retinol and high-concentration vitamin C.
- Skip saunas, jjimjilbang, vigorous exercise and alcohol in the first days, since heat can bring on flushing and irritation.
Individual results vary, and side effects are possible with any laser. If something looks unexpected after you are home, send a photo on WhatsApp and the dermatologist will advise.
Send a photo and your dates — a dermatologist will plan your pico laser sessions before you fly.
Tell us whether it is pigment, scars or pores that bothers you, and when you will be in Seoul. You will get a suggested plan, the price where it is listed, and available times.
