Aqua Peel Korea: Should You Exfoliate Flaky Skin First?
Flakes and lifting makeup make people want a peel. Dr. Lee explains why exfoliating dry skin can backfire, and how WELLS uses Aquapeel instead.
Aqua peel Korea: is it the answer to flaky skin?
Hello, I'm Dr. Won Sin Lee, a board-certified dermatologist and chief director at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. I completed my residency and board certification in dermatology at Asan Medical Center, where I am now an adjunct professor of dermatology. Patients planning an aqua peel in Korea often ask me about flaky skin, and this article is based on my YouTube video from June 2025 above.
My answer about aqua peel Korea requests for flaking is usually no: if your skin flakes because it is dry, removing more of it tends to make the problem worse. Fix the barrier first. A peel has its place, but it is not a cure for dryness.
Korea has a scrubbing culture, so many people grow up thinking dead skin is unhygienic and something to be removed. Medically, it is the opposite.
Why is the keratin layer worth keeping?
The outermost layer of the skin is literally called the keratin layer (stratum corneum). It is there to protect you. Cells form at the deepest layer of the epidermis and mature upward, and the skin turns them over naturally.
That layer protects the skin, holds in oil and is essential to the skin barrier. Removing it artificially lowers barrier function and helps the moisture that should stay in the dermis evaporate. That is why I tell patients that stripping it is not good for the skin.
Why does makeup lift, and what should you change first?
The common reason people exfoliate is that makeup won't sit well in the morning and looks like it is floating. That situation usually means something in your routine has already damaged the barrier:
- Products that don't suit your skin type
- Too much friction when applying products or washing your face
- A barrier that is already damaged, so moisture escapes and dry flakes lift
Exfoliating at that point keeps the vicious circle going. Correct the habits and find products that suit your skin type to improve barrier function first. My article on how to get Korean glass skin covers gentle cleansing and how often light exfoliation is reasonable.
Acne Scar & Enlarged Pore Treatment
- What it is
- A dermatologist-planned combination for scars and pores: Fractional Picosecond Laser Treatment, with mosaic fractional laser, microneedle RF, Aquapeel and the Clarity dual laser combined by scar type and pore condition.
- How it works
- Aquapeel is one component, chosen when pore condition calls for it, rather than a stand-alone answer to flaking. Results are shown to you with a dermatoscope.
- Sessions
- Set by the dermatologist at consultation, based on scar type and pore condition.
- Recovery
- With the fractional picosecond laser, redness usually clears in 3–4 days and no wound dressing is needed. Other components are explained at consultation.
- Price
- Confirmed at consultation (₩, VAT excluded).
Why patients fly in for it
- A board-certified dermatologist checks whether flaking comes from dryness or a skin condition before choosing any treatment.
- Aquapeel is combined with lasers and RF only where pores need it.
- Results are shown to you with a dermatoscope.

Message on WhatsAppWhat can a dermatology clinic in Seoul do instead?
In the clinic, improving the barrier and hydrating come first. That can mean a treatment using hyaluronic acid-based products for hydration; at WELLS, Rejuran HB+ combines polynucleotide with added hyaluronic acid.
Sometimes a specific skin condition has damaged the barrier. Then the right step is to see a dermatologist and treat that condition with oral or topical medicine, so you deal with the cause. In short, heavy flaking usually comes from one of two things:
- Dryness: find ways to restore hydration and the barrier.
- A condition such as dermatitis that makes keratin overgrow: treat it with appropriate oral or topical medicine.
That is why we look at the cause before any treatment. Our skin diseases clinic is where a rash-like flaking problem gets diagnosed.
Where does Aquapeel fit at WELLS?
Aqua peel is generally a water-based facial that cleans pores, and it can suit congested, oily pores. At WELLS, Aquapeel is part of our acne scar and enlarged pore treatment, combined with a fractional picosecond laser, mosaic fractional laser, microneedle RF or the Clarity dual laser depending on scar type and pore condition.
So the question to ask about aqua peel Korea menus is not "peel or no peel" but "what is my skin's problem". Enlarged pores and scars: a planned combination. Dry flakes: barrier repair and hydration. Persistent scaling or redness: a diagnosis first.
Send a clear photo and your travel dates on WhatsApp, and tell us whether you flake, break out or mainly worry about pores. Message on WhatsAppQuestions about this video
Is an aqua peel Korea treatment good for dry, flaky skin?
Usually not as a first step. If flakes come from dryness, the barrier is already weakened, and removing more keratin can make it worse. Barrier repair and hydration come first.
Is exfoliation bad for the skin?
The keratin layer protects the skin, holds in oil and supports the barrier, so removing it artificially lowers barrier function. Gentle, occasional exfoliation is different from stripping it often.
Why does my makeup look like it is floating?
It usually means the barrier is damaged, often from products that don't suit your skin type or too much friction, so moisture escapes and dry flakes lift.
Does WELLS offer Aquapeel?
Yes, as part of the acne scar and enlarged pore treatment, combined with lasers and RF depending on scar type and pore condition. The price is confirmed at consultation.
This article explains general medical information from the video. It is not a diagnosis; results vary by person and are decided in consultation.
