Korean Cystic Acne Treatment: How Many Days in Seoul Do You Need? Cost, Reviews and Methods

A trip works best as the start of cystic acne treatment: a dermatologist's diagnosis, in-clinic sessions you can walk out of the same day, and a plan to keep going at home. Scar work comes once the cysts are under control.

What makes cystic acne different from ordinary breakouts?

Planning Korean cystic acne treatment around a ten-day trip, and wondering whether that's enough time to change anything?

Read this before you book the return flight.

By the end you'll know how recovery runs day by day for each method, what decides the cost, what review threads get right and wrong, and how many days in Seoul make sense for deep, painful breakouts. That should help you choose between a short first visit and a longer stay that fits your skin and your budget.

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, Medical Director at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul.

A board-certified dermatologist consults and treats you here. For acne we choose between Gold PTT, Blue PDT, 1450 nm acne toning and chemical peels by the type of acne, and WELLS took part in a 2016 acne microbiome study with research institutions in the US and Luxembourg. We've been at our only location, in Apgujeong, since 2008.

I wrote this because cysts are where a short trip is most easily over-promised. Deep inflammation takes weeks to calm, and an in-clinic session can't stand in for the medical treatment many people with cysts need at home.

The short answer: a trip works best as the start of treatment. You get a dermatologist's diagnosis, sessions you can walk out of the same day, and a plan to keep going at home; scar treatment comes once the cysts are under control.

If you're not sure your breakouts are cysts at all, send a close-up and a front photo in daylight on WhatsApp, with a short list of what you've already tried. Clear photos and your travel dates are enough for a first suggestion.

A cyst sits deep in the skin, well below where a whitehead forms. It's inflamed, often painful, and it usually can't be squeezed out; trying tends to push the inflammation deeper and raise the chance of a scar. That's why the American Academy of Dermatology tells people with acne not to pick or pop.

Skin conditions that look alike can have different causes and stages, so the diagnosis decides the treatment. A painful lump along the jaw may be cystic acne, a deep nodule or an inflamed epidermoid cyst, and each is handled differently. I want to know which one it is before anyone chooses a laser.

For true cystic acne, the American Academy of Dermatology lists medical options such as isotretinoin, oral antibiotics, hormonal therapy for some women, and an injection into a single painful cyst by a dermatologist. Many of these run for months and need monitoring. If they become part of your plan, you'll want a doctor at home who can continue and supervise them, so it's worth arranging that before you fly.

Which in-clinic methods help with cysts?

Our acne methods are chosen by acne type, and each one does a different job:

  • Gold PTT: a gold nanoparticle ampoule is applied and then activated by laser to shut down the oil gland. It's given weekly for 3–5 sessions, with little disruption to daily life.
  • Blue PDT: uses no photosensitizer, so you can go out straight afterwards.
  • 1450 nm acne toning: heats the oil gland with almost no pain. WELLS has ten years of clinical data with this laser.
  • Aladdin and FCR peels: exfoliate dead skin cells and stimulate collagen, and they also work on back and chest acne.

For cysts, these work on the oil glands and inflammation that feed new breakouts. They don't empty a cyst that's already there, which is why the timing of your trip matters.

Skincare matters too, and it's where Korean products get the most attention online. A gentle cleanser and a non-comedogenic moisturizer support treatment, but no face wash reaches a cyst sitting deep under the skin. For the wider picture, I've compared Korean skincare with what a clinic visit adds, and set out which acne treatments work, and in what order.

Recovery, day by day, and what it means for your trip

MethodTreatment dayThe days after
Blue PDTYou can go out straight afterwardsSunscreen outdoors
Gold PTTLittle disruption to your dayNext session a week later, 3–5 in total
1450 nm acne toningAlmost no painSome people have mild redness for a short time
Aladdin or FCR peelSkin may feel tightLight flaking for a few days is common after peels
Fractional picosecond (scars)No wound dressingRedness usually clears in 3–4 days

Read the table against your calendar. The sessions themselves leave little to recover from. What takes time is the acne: cysts already under the skin settle over days to weeks, whichever method is used.

Gold PTT is the method most shaped by trip length, because the sessions come weekly. A trip of eight days can fit two sessions a week apart, and fitting three takes at least fifteen days. Anything beyond that continues on a later visit or gives way to the plan you follow at home.

Plan around our hours: weekdays 10:00–20:00, Saturdays 10:00–17:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. We're closed on Sundays and public holidays, so if you land on a Saturday evening, your first visit is Monday.

An example: twelve days, cysts along the jaw

Say you've had painful cysts along the jaw for three years, topical products haven't helped, and you have twelve days in Seoul starting on a Saturday. I'd use the Monday for diagnosis and a first session, add a second a week later, and keep your last days free of anything new. If the diagnosis points toward oral medication, book an appointment with your doctor at home for the week after you return and take your Seoul records with you.

That's what Korean cystic acne treatment realistically looks like on a trip of that length: a diagnosis, two sessions, and a clear handover to home.

Once your flights are settled, send your arrival and departure dates on WhatsApp with the one question that matters most for your trip: how many Gold PTT sessions could fit between them?

Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.

When can acne scars be treated?

The American Academy of Dermatology advises getting acne under control before treating scars, because new breakouts can leave new scars. While cysts are still forming, I'd hold scar work for a later trip.

When the time comes, Fractional Picosecond Laser works inside the dermis with almost no heat damage to the surface. There's no oozing and no wound dressing, and any redness usually clears in 3–4 days, which fits a trip.

Juvelook, a KFDA-approved mix of PLA and hyaluronic acid, fills depressed scars immediately while stimulating collagen. Mosaic fractional laser, microneedle RF, Aquapeel and the Clarity dual laser are combined depending on scar type, and results are shown to you with a dermatoscope. Planning scar treatment around a trip to Seoul covers that stage in more detail.

On medium and darker skin, inflamed acne often leaves brown marks, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which DermNet notes can take months to fade. These marks aren't scars, and steady sun protection helps them more than any laser on a short trip.

What decides the cost of a cystic acne plan?

The figure for your plan is shaped by a handful of factors:

  • Methods: which ones your acne type calls for, and whether more than one is combined.
  • Sessions: Gold PTT runs 3–5 weekly sessions, so how many fit into your trip shapes the total.
  • Areas: face only, or back and chest as well.
  • Scar work later: a separate stage with its own factors, which I've laid out in what sets the price of acne scar treatment in Seoul.
  • Care at home: any ongoing treatment with your own doctor is separate from what's done in Seoul.

To get a figure for your case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost, naming the areas involved and how many days you'll be in Seoul. Prices are confirmed at consultation once the dermatologist has examined you.

What do review threads get right and wrong about Korean acne treatment?

Threads about Korean cystic acne treatment repeat a few claims, and only some of them match how cysts behave.

“One trip cleared my acne.” For cysts that's unlikely. In-clinic sessions are a start, and deep inflammation takes weeks to settle.

“Korean skincare alone fixed it.” A gentle routine helps acne-prone skin, but it doesn't treat deep cysts on its own.

“You'll be red for a week after every session.” That depends on the method. Blue PDT lets you go out straight afterwards, while redness after fractional picosecond laser usually clears in 3–4 days.

“Squeeze the cysts before your session to save time.” Picking raises the risk of scars and dark marks, and it doesn't speed anything up.

Risks and side effects to know

Common and temporary: redness, warmth, mild stinging and, after peels, light flaking, usually over hours to a few days. After fractional picosecond laser, redness usually clears in 3–4 days.

Tell the dermatologist, and expect the plan may change or wait, if you're taking isotretinoin now or took it recently, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active infection or cold sore in the area, have a recent sunburn or tan, or have a history of keloid scarring. Many dermatologists delay certain peels and lasers around isotretinoin. Results and recovery differ from person to person, and the in-person examination decides which methods suit you.

After you fly home, a new cyst can still appear, because cystic acne runs in cycles. Don't squeeze it, and see your doctor at home; spreading redness, fever or rapidly increasing pain needs prompt local care. The CDC's medical tourism guidance recommends taking copies of your records and arranging follow-up care before you travel, and you can also message us a photo on WhatsApp.

Before you book: what to send

On WhatsApp, the most useful thing to add to your first message is a short list of what you've already used for your acne, roughly how long, and whether anything helped. You can ask before booking anything; pick the one question you most want answered, such as whether medication you've taken affects which methods you can have. When you come in, a dermatologist examines your skin, confirms what kind of acne it is, and recommends the methods that fit your skin and your days in Seoul.

Questions people ask

Before you message us

Should I squeeze or drain a cyst before my appointment?

No. Squeezing a cyst tends to push inflammation deeper and raises the risk of scarring and dark marks. Leave it for the dermatologist to assess.

Can I sightsee on the same day as an acne session?

With Blue PDT you can go out straight afterwards, and Gold PTT causes little disruption to daily life. After a peel, keep strong sun off your face and wear sunscreen.

Will a Korean face wash help cystic acne?

A gentle cleanser supports treatment and keeps skin comfortable, but no face wash reaches a cyst deep under the skin. Treat it as part of the routine, alongside medical care.

Can I treat acne scars on the same trip as active cysts?

Usually it's better to get the cysts under control first, because new breakouts can leave new scars. Scar treatment such as Fractional Picosecond Laser or Juvelook fits better on a later trip.

Can back and chest cysts be treated too?

Aladdin and FCR peels also work on back and chest acne. Adding areas changes the plan and the cost, so name every area when you ask.

Results and recovery vary by individual. Every treatment carries possible side effects, which are explained at the consultation. Prices are in Korean won, excluding 10% VAT, and confirmed at your consultation. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis.
