Korean Hormonal Acne Treatment on a Seoul Trip: How Far Can One Visit Go? Cost, Reviews and Methods

A Seoul visit can calm active breakouts, start treatment aimed at the oil glands and begin scar work. Hormonal acne follows a monthly cycle, so the trip works best as the start of a plan you continue at home.

Why hormonal acne keeps coming back

Is Korean hormonal acne treatment worth building a trip around when the breakouts along your jaw come back every month?

Give this ten minutes before you lock in your dates.

You'll come away knowing which methods a Seoul visit can start, what decides the cost, what reviews and K-beauty threads get right, and how many days to plan. Then you can decide whether this trip should carry the whole plan or simply start it.

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Sin Lee, Chief Director at WELLS Clinic. I'm a board-certified dermatologist who completed residency at Asan Medical Center in Seoul.

WELLS has been in Apgujeong since 2008. A dermatologist does the consultation and the treatment, and our acne treatments, from Gold PTT and Blue PDT to 1450 nm acne toning and chemical peels, are chosen by the type of acne in front of us.

I wrote this because many adults expect one intensive week in Seoul to end hormonal acne, and feel let down when it flares again a month later.

A visit can calm active breakouts, start treatment aimed at the oil glands and begin work on scars. Because hormonal acne follows a monthly cycle, the trip works best as the first part of a plan you continue at home.

If you're unsure your dates fit, send them on WhatsApp with a note of when your breakouts usually start, and ask whether that window is a sensible time to begin.

Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.

Hormonal acne is a label for a pattern more than a separate disease. Androgens, hormones everyone has, push the oil glands to make more sebum. That oil, dead skin and bacteria clog pores and inflame them, and in adults the deeper, tender bumps often sit along the jaw and chin.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that adult acne in women is often tied to hormonal shifts: around periods, pregnancy and menopause, or when starting or stopping birth control. Clinic treatments act on the gland and the inflammation, while the hormonal signal keeps arriving every month. That's the fact a trip plan has to account for.

Medicine aimed at the hormones themselves, such as combined birth control pills or spironolactone, is the other half for many women. The AAD describes these as options a dermatologist may prescribe, and they take months of use and follow-up. That part is usually better started and monitored by a doctor you can see regularly at home.

What can a Seoul visit do for hormonal acne?

The first thing it should give you is a diagnosis. Bumps on the jaw can be hormonal acne, but rosacea, folliculitis and perioral dermatitis can look similar. Skin conditions that look alike can have different causes and stages, so I treat a diagnosis, not a spot on the face.

Once acne is confirmed, the method is chosen by its type:

  • Gold PTT. A gold nanoparticle ampoule is applied, then activated by laser to target the oil gland. It runs weekly for 3–5 sessions, with little disruption to daily life.
  • 1450 nm acne toning. This laser heats the oil gland with almost no pain, and we have ten years of clinical data with it.
  • Blue PDT. It uses no photosensitizer, so you can go out straight afterward.
  • Aladdin and FCR peels. They exfoliate dead skin cells and stimulate collagen, and they're also used on back and chest acne.

For the order these usually go in, see acne treatment in Seoul: what works, and in what order. If you're still weighing whether a better routine alone could do the job, Korean acne treatment: skincare vs clinic sets the two side by side.

Your first visit, step by step

Before you fly, gather what a dermatologist will want to know. Useful things to send ahead are front and both side views of your face in daylight without makeup or filters, close-ups of the breakouts, your travel dates, previous treatments with the product or device and date, and your medicines, allergies and skin conditions.

On the day, the clinic is on the 8th floor at 842 Nonhyeon-ro, a five-minute walk from Apgujeong Station, Exit 3 (Line 3). Hours are Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00 and Saturday 10:00–17:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. We're closed on Sundays and public holidays.

In the consultation, the first question worth answering is when the breakouts began and whether they follow your cycle. Bring the names of everything you put on your skin and every medicine you take, birth control included. If you've taken isotretinoin in the past year, say so early, because it changes which procedures are suitable.

Ask at booking whether treatment can start on the same day as the consultation. If it can't, you'll want the next weekday free.

How many days in Seoul should you plan?

Planning Korean hormonal acne treatment around a trip is mostly arithmetic. Gold PTT runs weekly for 3–5 sessions, so a ten-day stay holds two sessions at most, and the full course needs three to five weeks. Count your Sundays and any public holidays out before you count sessions.

Say you're 44, deep bumps along your jaw flare the week before your period, you have a few flat brown marks and two shallow scars on your cheeks, and you have 12 days in Seoul with two Sundays in them. I'd want the consultation on your first weekday and active treatment started that week, with a second session seven days later. The course won't be finished when you fly, and that's fine if you know it going in.

The brown marks are most likely post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which DermNet describes as fading slowly over months; they are not scars. For the shallow scars, fractional picosecond laser leaves redness that usually clears in 3–4 days, so it belongs early in a trip. With active cysts on the same cheek, though, I'd want those calmer first, and scar work might suit a later visit better.

When you write, include front and both side photos in daylight without makeup, plus the names of any medicines you take. Then ask which treatment would come first in the days you have.

Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.

What do reviews and K-beauty threads get right?

Threads about Korean hormonal acne treatment mix clinic stories with skincare hauls. A few claims come up again and again.

“A gentle Korean cleanser cleared my acne.” Gentle cleansing does help. The AAD advises washing twice a day and after sweating with a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser, and not scrubbing. A cleanser can't change the hormonal signal, though, so it supports treatment without replacing it.

“Spot patches flatten pimples overnight.” Hydrocolloid patches can absorb fluid from a surface pimple and stop you picking at it. They don't reach the deep, tender bumps typical of jawline acne, and they don't prevent the next one.

“One laser session in Seoul fixed it.” For hormonal acne, one session is a start. The gland keeps responding to hormones, so flares tend to return unless the hormonal side is managed as well.

What decides the cost of hormonal acne treatment in Seoul?

The method comes first, since Gold PTT, acne toning, Blue PDT and peels are different treatments, and some people need more than one. The number of sessions comes next: a weekly course costs more in total than a single visit, and your days in Seoul cap how many sessions fit.

Area matters too. Face-only treatment differs from adding back or chest acne, where peels are often used. Scars are a separate line: fractional picosecond laser works inside the dermis without a wound dressing, and Juvelook (PLA plus hyaluronic acid, KFDA-approved) fills depressed scars on the day while stimulating collagen. If scars are a big part of your trip, read how to plan Korean acne scar treatment around a Seoul trip and what Juvelook can do for acne scars.

To get the figure for your own skin, ask on WhatsApp what the sessions your dates allow would cost for your case.

Risks and side effects to know

Common reactions are temporary: redness, warmth, flaking after a peel, and sometimes a short flare of breakouts in the days after treatment. After fractional picosecond laser, redness usually clears in 3–4 days. On darker skin, any inflammation or irritation can leave post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so daily sunscreen matters during and after a course.

As general medicine, it's wiser to wait or adjust the plan if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, are taking or recently took isotretinoin, had a peel or laser elsewhere in the past few weeks, have an active skin infection or cold sore in the area, or take medicine that makes skin sensitive to light. Tell the dermatologist about each of these. Whether a given treatment suits you is decided when a dermatologist examines your skin.

If something changes after you're home, a mild flare usually settles within days. Spreading redness, increasing pain, pus or fever needs a doctor near you promptly.

A short message with your dates is enough to start, and you can ask before booking anything. Tell us on WhatsApp which weeks you could travel, and ask which treatment would come first for acne like yours. When you arrive, a dermatologist examines your skin and recommends the treatment and number of sessions that fit your stay.

Questions people ask

Before you message us

Will hormonal acne come back after treatment in Korea?

It often does if the hormonal driver hasn't changed. Clinic treatments calm the oil glands and inflammation, but the monthly hormonal signal continues, so most people need maintenance at home and, for some, hormonal medicine prescribed by their own doctor.

Should I time my trip around my cycle?

You don't have to. Being in Seoul while breakouts are visible can make the pattern easier to see at consultation, but treatment for active acne can begin in any week of your cycle.

Can I treat acne scars on the same trip?

Sometimes. Fractional picosecond laser redness usually clears in 3–4 days and Juvelook fills depressed scars on the day, so both can fit a trip. When active cysts sit on the same area, calming them first is usually the safer order.

Do I need to stop my skincare before the visit?

Bring a list of everything you use.

How soon after treatment can I fly home?

If you've had fractional picosecond laser and want the redness gone first, allow 3–4 days.

Results and recovery vary by individual. Every treatment carries possible side effects, which are explained at the consultation. Prices are in Korean won, excluding 10% VAT, and confirmed at your consultation. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis.
