Korean Skin Whitening Treatment: Clearing Pigment, Not Bleaching Skin
Brighter skin in Korea comes from treating each type of pigment the right way. Dr. Lee explains what can clear in one visit and what needs a slower plan.
What is a Korean skin whitening treatment, really?
Hello, I'm Dr. Won Sin Lee, a board-certified dermatologist trained at Asan Medical Center and Chief Director of WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. Many visitors ask me for a Korean skin whitening treatment, especially those who come from abroad for a short stay and hope to clear every spot in one visit. This article is based on my YouTube video from January 2026 above.
A Korean skin whitening treatment at a dermatology clinic does not bleach your skin. It brightens your tone by treating each type of pigment the way that pigment needs to be treated. Some spots can largely clear in one session; others get worse if you try to remove them at once.
Below I explain which is which: freckles, melasma and lentigines (sun or age spots), and how many sessions each usually takes.
Which spots can clear in one session?
Freckles are the typical example. They hold only a small amount of pigment, and it isn't deep, so one treatment can remove a large part of it; in the video I put it at roughly 70% or more.
For freckles I mainly use BBL, an IPL-type light, and where needed I treat individual spots more strongly with a pico laser. At WELLS, BBL for freckles and sun spots runs at 515 nm with strong cooling, which lets that wavelength be used on Asian skin.
Why can't melasma and lentigines be removed all at once?
Melasma and lentigines are the pigment problems I see most. Unlike freckles, they form over many years with changes in the skin tissue itself from ultraviolet light and the environment.
If you try to remove them in one go with aggressive treatment that crusts and peels the skin, things can go wrong. The pigment can darken further (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), or it can lighten unevenly into blotches that look worse than before.
So for these, slow and repeated treatment is the safer and cleaner route. Melasma generally needs pico toning every one to two weeks, at least 10 sessions. It takes time, but it avoids the setbacks of forcing the pigment out.
Melasma & Stubborn Pigment (Pico Toning)
- What it is
- Picosecond toning at 1064 nm and 755 nm, which breaks abnormal pigment into finer particles with less heat to the surrounding skin. Used for melasma, age spots (lentigo), nevus of Ota and ABNOM.
- How it works
- Pigment is lightened gradually over a course of sessions instead of being burned off at once. Freckles and sun spots are treated with BBL at 515 nm, and pigment that keeps returning can be treated with MELA Triple Toning.
- Sessions
- Dr. Lee says melasma generally needs pico toning every one to two weeks, at least 10 sessions; the dermatologist sets the number and interval for you.
- Recovery
- Confirmed at consultation.
- Price
- Pico toning: confirmed at consultation. MELA Triple Toning ₩770,000 per session (VAT excluded).
Why patients fly in for it
- Pigment has been treated at WELLS since 2008 with picosecond lasers and BBL.
- MELA Triple Toning, a WELLS protocol for pigment that keeps coming back.
- A dermatologist decides which pigment is which before any laser is chosen.

Message on WhatsAppHow many sessions do lentigines need?
Lentigines vary with size and location. Large spots near the eyes or eyebrows need many sessions. A spot on the cheek about the size of a little fingernail can often be treated relatively safely in one or two.
- Small lentigo in an easy area: often one or two sessions.
- Large lentigo, or one in a difficult spot: at least five sessions to treat it safely.
- Melasma: pico toning every one to two weeks, generally 10 sessions or more.
- Freckles: often a large part clears in one session.

Why might your result differ from a friend's?
If someone you know had a spot cleared in one session, it is a big mistake to assume yours will go the same way. The type of pigment may be different, it may sit in a different place, and the amount may differ.
That is why a dermatologist should diagnose the pigment first and then choose the method. At WELLS, pico toning for melasma and stubborn pigment uses 1064 nm and 755 nm picosecond pulses that break pigment into finer particles with less heat to the surrounding skin.
For melasma that has come back after toning before, we also offer MELA Triple Toning, which adds microneedle RF and a skin-brightening enzyme developed at WELLS to the toning step. It is ₩770,000 per session (VAT excluded), and the dermatologist sets the number and interval.
How do you plan a Korean skin whitening treatment around a short trip?
Be realistic about what one visit can do. Freckles and small lentigines may fit a single trip; melasma needs a course of sessions one to two weeks apart, so it suits a longer stay or repeat visits.

Does a Korean skin whitening treatment bleach the skin?
No. At a dermatology clinic, brightening means treating the pigment itself, with the method matched to whether it is a freckle, melasma or a lentigo.
Can freckles be removed in one session?
Often a large part can. Freckles hold little pigment and sit shallow, so BBL, with a pico laser on stubborn spots, can clear much of it in one treatment.
How many sessions does melasma need?
Dr. Lee says melasma generally needs pico toning every one to two weeks, at least 10 sessions. The dermatologist sets the plan at consultation.
How much is MELA Triple Toning?
₩770,000 per session (VAT excluded). It is meant for pigment that has come back before; the dermatologist decides the number of sessions.
This article explains general medical information from the video. It is not a diagnosis; results vary by person and are decided in consultation.
