Korean Skin Laser Treatment Q&A: Thin Skin, Aftercare and Session Gaps
Dr. Won Sin Lee answers the questions patients ask most about pigment lasers: thinning skin, aftercare, session intervals, and whether melasma fades after menopause.
Does a Korean skin laser treatment make your skin thinner?
Hello, I'm Dr. Won Sin Lee, a board-certified dermatologist and Chief Director at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. I completed my dermatology residency at Asan Medical Center, where I am now an adjunct professor. This article is based on my YouTube video from November 2025 above, a Q&A on treating spots and pigment; translated captions are available on YouTube.
The question I hear most before a Korean skin laser treatment is whether it thins the skin. Pigment lasers used today do not usually make skin thinner. Resurfacing lasers that remove the surface layer can, but they are rarely used for pigment now.
What people feel as "thin" skin is temporary sensitivity. After a laser, the skin barrier is briefly weaker, so the skin may look red or feel dry. The skin is not actually thinner; it is a normal, temporary reaction.
How should you care for your skin after laser?
If the skin calms quickly, you barely notice the sensitive phase. Soothing care such as LDM, or a skin booster such as Rejuran when needed, adds hydration, regeneration and calming at the same time.
- For about a week, don't scrub when you wash your face, and pat it dry gently with a towel instead of rubbing.
- Moisturize well, especially for the first three days, with soothing, hydrating products, applied more than once a day if needed.
- Use sunscreen carefully, especially for one to two weeks, because skin takes in UV more easily after laser.
Pigment can look darker for a while as tiny crusts form and pigment underneath is pushed out. This usually resolves on its own in about a week. Real post-inflammatory pigmentation is different: it can happen when treated skin gets too much sun, which is why sunscreen matters so much.
MELA Triple Toning
- What it is
- Three steps for melasma and uneven pigment that keeps coming back: toning, microneedle RF and a skin-brightening enzyme with LDM.
- How it works
- Pico or Clarity toning breaks melanin down. Potenza microneedle RF renews the deeper skin environment. Then a skin-brightening enzyme developed at WELLS is applied as part of an LDM ultrasound treatment.
- Sessions
- The listed price is per session. Melasma is managed over time; the dermatologist sets the number and interval at consultation.
- Recovery
- Skin can feel temporarily sensitive after laser. Gentle cleansing, moisturizer and sunscreen are key in the first one to two weeks.
- Price
- 1 session ₩770,000 (VAT excluded)
Why patients fly in for it
- A board-certified dermatologist diagnoses the type of pigment before choosing a laser.
- It treats the skin environment, not only the pigment, for melasma that has come back before.
- LDM is part of the same session, which helps the skin calm down after laser.

Message on WhatsAppWhy does melasma need sessions every one to two weeks?
Melasma is the most common pigment problem patients bring to a dermatologist, and it cannot be cleared in one or two sessions. It usually needs five to ten sessions or more, one to two weeks apart.
The one-to-two-week gap gives sensitive skin time to recover. But if the gap is too long, new pigment keeps forming between sessions, and if more appears between treatments than each session removes, you won't see enough improvement. Aggressive treatment strong enough to crust often makes melasma darker, so I recommend steady pico toning instead.
For melasma that has come back before, WELLS offers MELA Triple Toning: Pico or Clarity toning, Potenza microneedle RF and a WELLS skin-brightening enzyme with LDM, at ₩770,000 per session (VAT excluded). Dr. Choi explains why melasma returns in Korean laser treatment for melasma.
How are freckles and age spots treated differently?
Freckles respond quickly. With BBL or IPL, one or two sessions can usually remove around 70% or more of the pigment. But freckles come back fast with sun exposure, so careful sun protection after treatment slows that down. At WELLS we use BBL for freckles and sun spots.
Age spots depend on size and location. Small ones can often be cleared in one or two sessions. Large ones close to the eyes are treated gently over a longer period, closer to a melasma approach, because treating them hard in one go can cause pigmentation problems.
Melasma, freckles and age spots each need a different approach to be treated safely and effectively, so an accurate diagnosis comes first. For a side-by-side look, see freckles vs melasma.
Will melasma fade after menopause?
Yes, but not right away. Hormone levels fall gradually after menopause rather than disappearing, so melasma usually starts to fade slowly about ten years or more later. Older women with white hair often have age spots, but melasma is not commonly seen at that age.
Menopause usually comes between the mid-40s and the 50s. When patients ask whether to wait, I tell them it is their choice: wait until their 70s for the pigment to fade on its own, or start treatment now and aim to finish within a year.
How do you plan a Korean skin laser treatment around a trip?
Freckles can often be handled in a short visit, while melasma needs regular sessions one to two weeks apart, so it suits a longer stay or repeat visits. Send a clear photo in natural light and your travel dates on WhatsApp; we reply in English, and the dermatologist confirms the diagnosis, plan and price at the clinic.
After treatment, keep the basics: moisturizer, sun protection and no irritation. WELLS is on the 8th floor of the Apgujeong Building, about five minutes on foot from Apgujeong Station (Line 3), Exit 3. Results vary from person to person.

Does a Korean skin laser treatment thin the skin?
Pigment lasers used today do not usually make skin thinner. The skin barrier is temporarily weaker after laser, which can feel like thin, sensitive skin, but it is a normal and temporary reaction.
How many sessions does melasma need?
Dr. Lee usually treats melasma with five to ten sessions or more, one to two weeks apart. Keeping to that interval matters, because new pigment forms between sessions if the gap is too long.
Why did my spots get darker after laser?
Temporary darkening from tiny crusts usually clears in about a week. Pigmentation that lasts can happen if treated skin gets too much sun, so sunscreen is important for one to two weeks.
How much is MELA Triple Toning at WELLS?
₩770,000 per session (VAT excluded). The dermatologist sets the number and interval of sessions at consultation.
