Can Korean anti aging care really slow wrinkles?

I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, a board-certified dermatologist (M.D., Ph.D.) trained at Seoul National University Hospital and Medical Director of WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. This article is based on my YouTube video from November 2022 above, about how microbiome science may shape wrinkle care; translated English captions are available on YouTube.

Korean anti aging care can support collagen and skin function today, but the microbiome-based treatments in my video are still research, not something you can book. What you can have now is a dermatologist-led treatment that works on collagen, plus a skin-microbiome test that shows the state of your skin before treatment and again a year later.

That distinction matters, because a lot of what is sold as "microbiome anti-aging" is a supplement. Below I explain why skin ages, why home routines stall, what the research is really working on, and what WELLS offers today.

Why do wrinkles form, and why do creams and supplements struggle?

Wrinkles form as the skin's collagen gradually decreases and the collagen that remains ages and loses its spring. The skin's microbial community also changes with age; the genetic profile of microbes on young children's skin differs from that on older skin, which is why researchers study which microbes are linked to aging.

Home care struggles for practical reasons. Retinoids are among the most established anti-aging ingredients, but they usually need to be applied every day for about six months before wrinkles improve, and few people keep that up.

Microbiome supplements are a different story again. Most take known lactic acid bacteria strains and put them in a capsule, which involves little new technology. Microbiome therapeutics are developed and tested as medicines, and that field started with the gut: a chronic inflammatory bowel condition improved when stool from healthy donors was transferred to patients. Two problems followed:

  • Natural strains had to be taken in enormous amounts, more than a person can realistically swallow.
  • Mixing several strains made it hard to explain exactly how a treatment works, which makes it difficult to meet drug regulators' standards in the US and Korea.

The newer answer is synthetic biology: engineering a safe bacterium so it does one clear job. A US team, for example, engineered a strain found on healthy skin to release a substance against harmful bacteria, with a built-in switch that limits how long it survives. It is promising, but it is not yet a wrinkle treatment.

What Korean anti aging treatment does WELLS offer today?

Today we offer Thermage MAX, which works on collagen directly. Thermage FLX uses monopolar radiofrequency to heat the dermis and stimulate collagen remodeling, and the WELLS protocol is built around protecting the cells that make that collagen.

  • AQ MAX infusion, two bottles: alanyl-glutamine is infused before treatment so collagen-producing fibroblasts survive the heat of the RF pulses. Glutamine also directly activates collagen synthesis, and the same solution is used in university hospitals for post-surgical skin recovery.
  • Laboratory data: fibroblasts treated with AQ resisted death under 43 °C and 55 °C heat, and collagen synthesis was maintained after heating, with the protective effect increasing with AQ concentration.
  • Collagen booster serum: applied as the FLX handpiece works, it adjusts the skin's conductivity to reduce the sting while its collagen peptides push collagen synthesis further.
  • A skin-microbiome test is part of the same visit; I explain what it measures in my article on skin analysis in Seoul.

It suits loose skin on the cheeks, jawline and neck, fine lines and loss of firmness, and people who have had standard Thermage and want a more consistent result. The full protocol is on our Thermage MAX page.

How WELLS treats it

Thermage MAX

What it is
Thermage FLX radiofrequency combined with a skin-microbiome test, AQ MAX infusion and a collagen-peptide serum, developed as part of the WELLS Thermage MAX protocol.
How it works
We test your skin microbiome and infuse two bottles of AQ MAX (alanyl-glutamine) before the RF treatment so collagen-producing cells are protected from the heat; a collagen-peptide serum is applied as the handpiece works.
Sessions
One session; the microbiome test is repeated at one year so changes can be compared. The number of shots (600 or 900) is set at consultation.
Recovery
Confirmed at consultation. No deep sedation, no fasting, and you can drive afterwards.
Price
600 shots ₩3,465,000 · 900 shots ₩4,477,000 (VAT excluded)

Why patients fly in for it

  • A board-certified dermatologist performs your treatment in person.
  • Genuine Thermage tips, with a ten-times refund if a tip is ever found not to be genuine.
  • A skin-microbiome test before treatment and again a year later.

What should you expect from anti aging Korea treatment at WELLS?

Expect a gradual change rather than an overnight one. After Thermage the skin is usually slightly swollen with more glow for about two weeks, feels held in at around one month, and that tight sensation softens from about two months while new collagen keeps building. I walk through each stage in my article on Thermage before and after.

On average the new collagen from one session stays about a year to a year and a half, which is why I suggest repeating Thermage about once a year. Your dermatologist decides at consultation whether 600 or 900 shots suits the area you want treated.

We do not use deep sedation for Thermage. Non-sedation Air NOX with local anesthetic keeps you awake and comfortable, no fasting is needed, and you can drive afterwards.

Why do patients fly to WELLS for Korean anti aging care?

Because the people treating you also work on where this field is going. At CutisBio, the biotech company I founded, we are developing an engineered microbe designed to produce retinoids on the skin, so wrinkles could one day be addressed without daily application. This is research, not a treatment available at WELLS, and I want to be clear about that.

  • Genuine Thermage tips; if a tip is ever found not to be genuine, we refund ten times the treatment price.
  • Dr. Won Sin Lee lectured at Thermage's headquarters in 2016, and the clinic exchanges Thermage FLX cases with a New York laser dermatology practice.
  • No unnecessary sedation: Air NOX keeps you awake, with no recovery room needed.
  • Consultations are available in English, and the clinic has been in Apgujeong since 2008.

If you are comparing options for lines, my posts on korean wrinkle treatment and thermage flx korea explain who each approach suits.

How do you plan an anti aging Seoul trip around Thermage MAX?

Plan one visit now and a return about a year later, when the microbiome test is repeated and compared. Send a photo, your concerns and your travel dates on WhatsApp; we reply in English with options and appointment times, and a dermatologist confirms the plan and price at the clinic.

WELLS is on the 8th floor of the Apgujeong Building, about five minutes on foot from Apgujeong Station (Line 3), Exit 3. For the basics of the skin microbiome itself, see my article on skin analysis in Seoul.

Results vary from person to person, and the right plan for you is decided in consultation with your dermatologist.

Q&A

Questions about this video

Can I get a microbiome-based Korean anti aging treatment at WELLS now?

The engineered-microbe treatments in the video are still research. What WELLS offers today is Thermage MAX, with a skin-microbiome test before treatment that is repeated a year later to compare.

What is CutisBio developing?

Dr. Choi's company is developing an engineered microbe designed to produce retinoids on the skin, so wrinkles could be addressed without daily application. It is in development and not a clinic treatment.

Are microbiome supplements the same as microbiome therapeutics?

No. Supplements mostly package known lactic acid bacteria strains. Therapeutics are developed and tested as medicines, and engineered strains are the newest step.

How much does Thermage MAX cost at WELLS?

₩3,465,000 (VAT excluded) for 600 shots and ₩4,477,000 (VAT excluded) for 900 shots. Your dermatologist confirms the right option at consultation.

Does anti-aging treatment at WELLS involve deep sedation?

No. WELLS does not use deep sedation for Thermage; non-sedation Air NOX with local anesthetic keeps you awake, and no fasting is needed.

This article explains general medical information from the video. It is not a diagnosis; results vary by person and are decided in consultation.
