Is it actually a mole? Why diagnosis comes before the laser

Many of the bumps people call moles are something else. Milia, flat warts, sebaceous hyperplasia and syringoma can all look like a small raised spot, but they sit at different depths in the skin and need different treatment.

Flat warts and milia are the most superficial. Sebaceous hyperplasia sits in the upper dermis and has a faint yellow, oily tinge. Syringoma reaches the lower dermis and is easily mistaken for milia. Treating the wrong thing the wrong way can leave a scar or a dark mark and still not remove the lesion.

In general terms, a laser-treated spot is a small wound that heals best when it is kept clean, protected and left alone. For many people, gentle washing is fine, while scrubbing, picking and rubbing the area are not. Heavy sweating, saunas and friction from clothing or straps are usually worth avoiding while the spot is fresh.
