Lip Filler How Long Does Swelling Last? Cost, Reviews, Methods & When I'd Wait

Lip swelling usually peaks in the first one to two days and mostly settles within about a week; the settled shape shows at around two weeks. Book the injection early in your Seoul trip, not the day before you fly.

How long does lip swelling usually last, day by day?

Flying home a few days after your appointment, and the real question behind “lip filler how long does swelling last” is whether your lips will look like yours again by the time you board?

Read this before you pick the day for your injection.

You'll know how lip swelling usually runs day by day, what decides the cost, what reviews get right and wrong, and which methods change how much you swell and bruise. That's enough to choose a day and an amount that fit your trip and your budget.

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, Medical Director (M.D., Ph.D.) at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. I completed my residency and board certification in dermatology at Seoul National University Hospital.

At WELLS, a dermatologist does both the consultation and the injection. We inject filler with a cannula where possible, and we confirm the product and amount with you before treatment.

I wrote this because the costliest mistake with lip filler on a trip is usually the date, not the product: an injection booked the day before a long flight.

For most people, lip swelling peaks in the first one to two days, drops clearly by day three or four, and is mostly gone within about a week. The settled shape usually shows at around two weeks, and a bruise can outlast the swelling.

If you're still choosing dates, send a daylight photo of your lips, front and side, on WhatsApp with your arrival and departure dates. Ask one thing with it: which day of your trip leaves the most room for swelling to settle.

Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.

The question “lip filler how long does swelling last” has a second half that matters more on a trip: how long until you can fly, eat in public and be photographed without thinking about it. The course below is the usual one after hyaluronic acid filler in the lips. Your amount, the product and your own tissue can shift it by a day or two.

WhenWhat you'll usually seeWhat it means for your trip
Injection dayLips feel tight and look fuller than planned; tiny bumps at entry pointsSoft food, no alcohol, no hard workout
Days 1–2Swelling usually peaks, often worst on waking; one side may look biggerA poor day for photos or meetings
Days 3–4Much of the swelling has gone for many people; lips still feel firmFlying is usually fine; a bruise may need concealer
Days 5–7Mild puffiness, mostly in the morningClose to how you'll look at home
Around 2 weeksThe gel has settled into the tissueThe point to judge shape and any top-up

Judge the shape at two weeks, never on day two. Lips at their peak look larger and less even than the result, and most of the worry I hear about lip filler happens in that window.

Bruising runs on its own clock. If the tip passes close to a small vessel, the mark can turn yellow-green and take about a week or longer to fade, even after the swelling has gone.

Say you land at Incheon on a Thursday evening and fly home the following Wednesday. I'd put the injection on Friday morning, so the peak falls on the weekend and you have four or five days of settling before the flight. If you land on a Saturday afternoon instead, keep in mind that we close at 17:00 on Saturdays and all day on Sundays and holidays, so Monday is the first weekday you can come in.

Why lips swell more than other filler areas

The lips are soft, they move all day, and they have a dense blood supply just under thin skin. Each pass of a needle or cannula is a small injury, and the tissue answers with fluid. Hyaluronic acid also holds water, which adds a little extra fullness in the first days.

A chin sits on bone and firmer tissue, which is part of why the plan in our chin filler guide for reshaping the jawline runs on a different timeline. In the lips, a first treatment usually swells more than a small top-up, simply because more product goes in through more passes.

When I'd tell you to wait for another trip

Some lip filler plans are fine medically and wrong for the calendar. These are the situations where I'd suggest moving the injection, doing less, or leaving it for a later visit:

  • Your flight leaves within about 48 hours of the injection. You'd travel at the peak, with no chance to see the settled result before you go.
  • You have a cold sore, or one is starting. Injecting near an active sore can spread or worsen it. If you get cold sores often, say so beforehand, because doctors sometimes give preventive antiviral medicine.
  • You've just had dental work, or have some booked in the next couple of weeks. Many dermatologists prefer a gap because of the infection risk around the mouth.
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding. Cosmetic filler is usually postponed until afterwards.
  • There's a wedding or a photo shoot within a week. Bruising alone can take that long.
  • Old filler from somewhere else feels lumpy. Work done by non-specialists can leave problems that take longer to sort out, so I'd want a dermatologist to look at it first; dissolving it needs its own days before anything new goes in.

If you've had lip filler before, add the product name and roughly when it was done to your WhatsApp message, and ask whether that changes what makes sense for this trip.

Which methods change how much you swell and bruise?

The tool matters. A cannula has a blunt tip and usually needs fewer entry points, which for many people means less bruising. A fine needle gives more precision along the lip border, so a plan may use both.

The product matters too. Softer hyaluronic acid gels spread more evenly in a moving lip; firmer ones hold a defined shape but can feel firmer for the first weeks. Many lip fillers also contain a local anesthetic, which is worth knowing if you've ever reacted to one.

Then there's the amount. A modest first amount swells less, leaves room to add later, and is easier to judge at two weeks. Filler that spreads beyond where it was placed is a separate problem from swelling; the same ideas behind how under eye filler migration is assessed apply to lip filler that drifts above the border.

What do reviews get right and wrong about lip swelling?

Most forum threads answering “lip filler how long does swelling last” mix accurate experience with a few claims that don't hold up medically.

“The swelling is gone in a day.” True for some small top-ups. After a first full treatment, a few days of visible swelling is more typical.

“If it's uneven on day two, it's botched.” Usually not. Swelling is often uneven at first because each side takes a different number of passes and drains differently.

“Lumps always go away on their own.” Partly true. Soft, swollen bumps often settle within one to two weeks, but a firm lump that's still there at two weeks should be examined, and hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed. Overfilling is the other thing reviews confuse with swelling; our guide to what goes wrong with bad cheek fillers shows how overfill looks once the swelling is gone.

“Ice helps.” For many people, a cold compress wrapped in cloth, used in short spells on the first day, does reduce swelling. Some threads also lump lip filler together with collagen stimulators such as PLLA, which build volume slowly over months and aren't used in the lips; the Korean PLLA filler and Sculptra planning post covers how those work.

What decides the cost of lip filler in Seoul?

Lip filler cost comes down to a handful of things you can mostly predict from a photo and your dates:

  • The product and how firm the gel needs to be for the shape you want.
  • The amount, meaning how many syringes your lips need.
  • Old filler that has to be dissolved before anything new goes in.
  • Your days in Seoul, which can change how much is sensible to do in one visit.
  • Other areas treated in the same appointment.

To get the figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost, with a photo of your lips and a note of any previous filler.

Risks and side effects to know

The common reactions are temporary: swelling, bruising, tenderness and small bumps at the entry points, usually easing over a few days to two weeks. The US Food and Drug Administration lists these among the common side effects of dermal fillers, and the American Academy of Dermatology also describes swelling and bruising as expected after filler. How long they last differs from person to person.

As general medicine, it's wiser to wait or skip lip filler if you have an infection or cold sore near the mouth, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have had a reaction to an ingredient such as a local anesthetic, or take medicine that thins the blood. Tell the dermatologist about that medicine, and don't stop anything prescribed without asking the doctor who prescribed it.

The FDA also describes a rare but serious risk: filler entering a blood vessel, which can damage skin and, very rarely, affect vision. Once you're home, skin on the lip that turns pale, white or dusky, pain that keeps getting worse, or any change in your vision means going to emergency care straight away. Increasing heat, redness and pain days later can mean infection and needs a local doctor. The CDC's medical tourism guidance advises carrying a record of what was done, so keep the product name and amount with you.

One photo of your lips and your flight dates are enough to start a conversation on WhatsApp, and you can ask before booking anything. When you come to Apgujeong, a dermatologist examines your lips, confirms the product and amount with you, and recommends what fits your face and your calendar.

Questions people ask

Before you message us

Can I fly the day after lip filler?

Flying itself isn't the problem; the timing is. The day after is usually close to peak swelling, so you'd travel at your most swollen. If you must, keep your head up when resting, drink water and skip alcohol on the flight.

Why do my lips look more swollen in the morning?

Fluid collects in the face while you lie flat, so many people look puffiest on waking for the first several days. Sleeping with your head slightly raised for the first nights can help.

When can I tell whether I need more filler?

Wait about two weeks. Before then, swelling hides the real shape, and adding more too early can end in overfilling.

Is it normal for one side to swell more than the other?

Yes, in the first days it's common. Each side takes a different number of passes and drains differently. If the difference is still clear at two weeks, have it checked.

Does a lip filler top-up swell less than the first treatment?

Often, yes, because a top-up usually uses a smaller amount through fewer passes. For lip filler how long does swelling last after a small top-up, many people see it settle within a few days.

Results and recovery vary by individual. Every treatment carries possible side effects, which are explained at the consultation. Prices are in Korean won, excluding 10% VAT, and confirmed at your consultation. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis.
