Lip Filler Recovery Time: Refill Now or Fix Old Filler First? Cost, Reviews and Methods

For most people, lip swelling peaks in the first one to two days and largely settles by day three to five, with the final shape at about two weeks. Old filler that must be dissolved first adds a gap before any refill.

Day by day: what lip filler recovery time looks like

Worried your lip filler recovery time won't fit between the injection and your flight home, especially if old filler from a past appointment has to come out first?

Read this before you choose your treatment day.

You'll know what each day of swelling looks like, which methods change bruising, what reviews get right and wrong, and what decides the cost. That lets you choose between refilling now and fixing the old filler first, for your lips and your budget.

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi (Medical Director · M.D., Ph.D.), a board-certified dermatologist who completed residency and board certification at Seoul National University Hospital.

At WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, a dermatologist consults and injects. Filler goes in with a cannula where possible, which minimizes the vessel-damage risk of a standard needle, and we confirm the product and amount with you before treatment.

I wrote this because many people book lip filler for their last full day in Seoul and then board the plane with the swelling at its peak.

For most people, lip swelling peaks in the first one to two days and has largely settled by day three to five; bruising can take about a week, and the final shape shows at around two weeks. If old filler must be dissolved first, that adds a waiting gap before any refill.

If you're not sure which of those timelines is yours, send a front and a side photo of your lips in daylight on WhatsApp, with the name and date of any filler you've had before, and ask one thing: refill now, or deal with the old filler first?

Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.

Lips swell more than a cheek or chin does after the same injection. They have a dense blood supply and loose, mobile tissue, and hyaluronic acid filler draws in water as it settles. That's the part most people underestimate when they plan a trip.

On the injection day, your lips look fuller than they will end up. The numbing usually wears off within a few hours, and you may see small entry marks.

Days one and two are usually the peak. The upper lip often looks heaviest in the morning and eases a little by evening. Firm spots you can feel now are mostly swelling and gel that hasn't settled yet, so this is the wrong moment to massage the lips or judge the shape.

By days three to five, swelling for most people has dropped to the point where someone across a table wouldn't notice. Bruising, if you have it, may still show as a yellowish patch that makeup can cover once the entry points have closed.

Between one and two weeks, the gel integrates with the tissue, and the shape you see at two weeks is the one to judge. That's also when a small touch-up, if you need one, makes sense.

First-time lips or old filler to fix first: how the timeline changes

The same search covers three different situations, and they don't share a timeline.

Your situationWhat happens on the tripWhat to plan around
First lip fillerOne injection visitSwelling mostly settles in 3–5 days; allow about a week before photos that matter
Small touch-up over settled fillerOne visit, smaller amountOften less swelling, but the first two days still need room
Old filler that has migrated or feels lumpyDissolve first, then decide on refillingMany doctors wait around two weeks after dissolving, so the refill may belong to a later trip

The third row is where people get caught. Hyaluronic acid filler can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, and the dissolving causes swelling of its own. Stacking a dissolve and a refill into the same few days means judging new filler on top of a lip that hasn't settled.

Say you had lip filler at home two years ago, and there's now a soft ridge above the upper lip border that shows when you smile. Before anything else, I'd want to know whether that ridge is filler that has spread past the border.

It's the same reasoning behind how filler migration is assessed under the eyes: find out where the gel actually sits before adding more. If it is migrated filler and you're in Seoul for eight days, I'd rather dissolve on this trip and leave the refill for when the lip has settled, than rush both and fly home unsure which swelling is which.

How many days in Seoul should you plan around the injection?

Your lip filler recovery time starts on the injection day, so count backwards from your flight. If you don't want visible swelling on the plane or at arrivals, leave at least three to five days between the injection and departure. If you're flying straight into a wedding or work photos, a full week is the safer margin, since bruising is the slowest part to fade.

The clinic's hours shape this more than people expect. WELLS is open Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00 and Saturday 10:00–17:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00, and closed on Sundays and public holidays. Land on a Friday night and your first chance to be seen is Saturday; a Saturday injection then gives you the closed Sunday to rest through the peak.

Flying itself isn't known to damage hyaluronic acid filler. Some people find dry cabin air and hours of sitting make the lips feel tighter for the first day or two, which is one more reason to keep the injection early in your trip. For that first day or two, most doctors also suggest skipping hard exercise, saunas and alcohol, since heat and raised blood pressure can make swelling and bruising worse.

If you're thinking of adding another area on the same trip, the days add up differently. Chin filler planned by a dermatologist usually swells less than lips, but injecting both on one day puts two areas through their peak together.

When you message, put your arrival and departure dates first, then a side-view photo of your lips in daylight, and ask which day of your trip leaves enough room before the flight.

Which methods change bruising and swelling?

Three choices make the most difference to the days after.

The first is cannula or needle. At WELLS, filler goes in with a cannula where possible. A blunt cannula tends to push past vessels instead of piercing them, which for many people means less bruising; a fine needle is often still used where a crisp lip border needs definition.

The second is the gel. Softer hyaluronic acid gels are generally preferred in lips, which move all day; firmer gels made for structure elsewhere can feel stiff here. Ask which product is planned and why, since the product is confirmed with you before treatment.

The third is the amount. More filler in one session usually means more swelling and a bigger change to get used to. A smaller amount now, judged at two weeks, is often the steadier route for a first time.

One type of injectable doesn't belong in lips at all. PLLA filler such as Sculptra builds volume slowly in the face and isn't a lip product. Lip filler is generally hyaluronic acid, which can also be dissolved if it ever needs to be.

What do reviews get right and wrong about lip swelling?

Review threads tend to repeat a few claims, and some hold up better than others.

“The swelling is gone by the next morning.” For some people with a small amount, yes. For most, the next morning is close to the peak, and plans built on this claim are how people end up with swollen lips at the gate.

“Lumps in the first week mean it was done badly.” Not necessarily. Early firmness is common while gel and swelling settle. Lumps still there after two weeks, or lumps that are painful, red or growing, are worth showing to a doctor.

“You can't fly after lip filler.” There's no firm medical rule against it. What matters is how you'll look on arrival and who you can reach if something feels wrong once you're home.

“It looks huge at first, then shrinks back.” True, and it's the reason to judge at two weeks instead of on day two.

What decides the cost of lip filler for your case?

There's no figure in this post, because the cost depends on details only your lips can answer.

The product comes first, since different hyaluronic acid gels are priced differently. The amount comes next, and for lips it's often smaller than people expect. If old filler has to be dissolved, that's an extra step and possibly an extra visit. Adding another area on the same day changes the plan, and so does whether your days in Seoul leave room for a check before you fly.

To get the figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what lip filler would cost for you, with a photo of your lips.

Risks and side effects to know before you fly

The common reactions are temporary: swelling, bruising, tenderness, small entry marks and some unevenness while the lips settle. These usually ease over days and are mostly gone within two weeks, though everyone's skin responds differently.

Some people should wait or tell the doctor first. That includes anyone with an active cold sore or frequent cold sores, since lip injections can trigger an outbreak; infection or inflamed skin on or around the lips; pregnancy or breastfeeding; allergy to lidocaine or to a filler ingredient; and blood-thinning medicines or supplements, which raise the chance of bruising. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless your own doctor tells you otherwise.

The rare, serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists this among the risks of dermal fillers, one that can damage skin and, in rare cases, cause vision problems. Warning signs are severe pain, skin turning pale, blotchy or dusky, or any change in vision.

If something appears after you're home, act on how urgent it is. Severe pain, a color change in the skin or any vision change means going to an emergency department right away; increasing redness, warmth or a lump that keeps growing needs a local doctor promptly. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises medical travelers to plan follow-up care at home and keep copies of their records, so carry the product name and injection date with you.

What should you send before booking a lip filler day?

One photo is enough to start, and you can ask before booking anything. Send a picture of your lips in daylight on WhatsApp and ask the question that's actually holding you back, whether it's the swelling, the old filler or the flight. When you come in, a dermatologist examines your lips and recommends the amount and method that fit them.

Questions people ask

Before you message us

Can I fly the day after lip filler?

There's no firm medical rule against it, and flying isn't known to damage hyaluronic acid filler. The day after is usually close to peak swelling, though, so if you mind how you look on the plane or at arrivals, leave three to five days.

How long does lip filler last?

Hyaluronic acid lip filler often lasts several months to about a year. Lips move constantly, so filler there tends to break down sooner than in the cheeks or chin, and the product and amount used also play a part.

Is lip filler recovery time longer if old filler is dissolved first?

Yes. Dissolving with hyaluronidase causes swelling of its own, and many doctors wait around two weeks before refilling. On a short trip, that often means dissolving now and refilling on a later visit.

When can I wear lipstick again?

Generally once the entry points have closed, which is often after the first day. Use a clean product, and ask at your appointment what applies to the technique used on your lips.

Is the plan I discuss on WhatsApp final?

Photos help with suggesting options and timing, but the plan and price are confirmed only after the dermatologist examines you in Seoul.

Results and recovery vary by individual. Every treatment carries possible side effects, which are explained at the consultation. Prices are in Korean won, excluding 10% VAT, and confirmed at your consultation. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis.
