Lip Filler Recovery Tips: What Actually Helps the Swelling Settle? Cost, Reviews and Methods

Lip swelling usually peaks over the first two to three days and mostly settles within one to two weeks, so have the injection early in your Seoul trip and keep the first 48 hours cool and quiet.

How long does lip swelling last, and why do lips swell more?

Worried your lips will still look swollen at a family dinner or on the flight home, and not sure which lip filler recovery tips actually make a difference?

Read this before you choose the day of your injection.

By the end you'll know how lip swelling usually runs day by day, which methods change recovery, what reviews get right and wrong, and what decides the cost. That way you can pick an injection day and an amount that fit your trip and your budget.

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, Medical Director at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. I completed my residency and board certification in dermatology at Seoul National University Hospital.

At WELLS a board-certified dermatologist consults and injects. We inject with a cannula where possible, because it lowers the risk of vessel damage compared with a standard needle, and we confirm the product and amount with you before treatment.

I wrote this because a lot of aftercare advice treats lip filler as a one-evening affair, and visitors end up booking the injection the day before their flight.

Lip swelling usually peaks over the first two to three days and mostly settles within one to two weeks. So have the injection early in your trip, keep the first 48 hours cool and quiet, and leave your lips alone.

If you're unsure which day of your trip to book, send a front photo of your lips in daylight and your flight dates on WhatsApp, with the one question on your mind, such as “Is day three early enough?”

Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.

The lips have a dense blood supply and move every time you talk or eat, so they usually swell more than the cheeks or chin after the same amount of filler. Hyaluronic acid also holds water, which adds to the fullness in the first days. For many people the lips look largest the morning after and on day two, then come down steadily.

Most visible swelling usually fades within the first week, and the shape you'll live with tends to show at around two weeks. Bruising runs on its own clock. If the needle or cannula nicks a small vessel, a bruise can appear the next day and take about a week to fade, sometimes longer.

Early unevenness is common. One side may look fuller, or you may feel a firm spot near an injection point, and in most cases that is swelling rather than the final result. The American Academy of Dermatology lists bruising, swelling and tenderness among the usual short-term effects of fillers.

Lip filler recovery tips for the first 72 hours

The first 48 hours are when doing less helps most. Everything below either keeps blood flow and heat down or keeps pressure off filler that hasn't settled yet.

  • Use a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for about ten minutes at a time, resting it lightly rather than pressing.
  • Sleep with your head on an extra pillow for the first two nights.
  • Skip alcohol, saunas, the jjimjilbang, hot yoga and hard workouts for the first day or two. Heat and a raised heart rate tend to increase swelling and bruising.
  • Don't massage, pinch or test firm spots unless the doctor who injected you asks you to.
  • Keep lipstick and lip products off until the tiny injection points have closed, usually by the next day.
  • Choose soft, less salty food for the first evening. Korean barbecue with soju is a better plan for later in the week.

If you've had cold sores before, tell the doctor before the injection. Needle work around the lips can trigger a flare, and doctors sometimes prescribe an antiviral tablet as a precaution.

These lip filler recovery tips assume a hyaluronic acid filler, which is what is generally used in lips. Flying worries people more than it needs to. Normal cabin pressure isn't known to move hyaluronic acid filler, though a long flight with salty meals and little movement can make your face puffier for a day, so drink water and walk the aisle.

The reason to leave days between the injection and your flight is distance from the doctor who treated you, not air pressure.

Your days in Seoul, mapped to the swelling

WELLS is open weekdays 10:00–20:00 and Saturdays 10:00–17:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00, and is closed on Sundays and public holidays. If you land on a Saturday evening, Monday is your first chance at an appointment. Book the injection early in your trip so the swelling can settle before you fly.

On the evening of the injection, expect tightness, pinpoint marks and some unevenness. Days one to three usually bring the peak of the swelling and, if it's going to appear, a bruise. By days four to seven the swelling is coming down and a bruise turns yellow, so makeup can cover it once the skin is closed. Around day fourteen the shape is close to how it will stay, and a daylight photo for your records is worth taking.

Say you're 50, in Seoul for nine days to see family, your upper lip has thinned over the years, and you fly home on a Sunday. I'd aim for the injection on day two or three, with a modest amount aimed at the border and body of the upper lip. I'd keep the big family dinner for the second half of the week. The worst of the swelling is then behind you before the photos, and you're still in Seoul for several days if anything needs a second look.

The day before your flight is the one day I'd avoid. If a firm spot or a bruise turns out to need attention, you want to be a short ride from Apgujeong Station (Line 3, Exit 3) rather than a long flight away.

To see how your own dates line up, send your arrival and departure dates on WhatsApp with a side photo of your lips in daylight, and ask which day of your trip to book the injection.

Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.

What do lip filler reviews get right and wrong?

Forum threads and review posts tend to repeat the same few claims. Some hold up medically, some don't.

“The first three days look the worst.” Largely true. That matches how swelling usually behaves in the lips, and it's why your social plans belong later in the trip.

“Arnica or pineapple stops bruising.” The evidence is thin. They're harmless for most people, but don't count on them. Tell the doctor about supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E or ginkgo, which can make bruising more likely, and if you take a prescribed blood thinner, don't stop it on your own.

“A lump means the filler was done badly.” Not usually in the first days. A firm spot during swelling often softens as it settles, while one that's still there after two weeks deserves an exam.

“Lip filler always migrates.” Filler drifting above the lip border does happen, more often after repeated top-ups or very superficial placement. Our post on under eye filler migration explains how a dermatologist assesses where filler has moved, and the same reasoning applies to lips. Volume added year after year is also how faces end up looking overfilled, which we cover in our post on pillow face filler.

Which methods change how you recover?

How the filler goes in affects bruising more than any aftercare trick. A cannula has a blunt tip and can move under the skin through fewer entry points, which is why we use one where possible. Many injectors still use a fine needle for a crisp border line, where precision matters more, so expect a small bruise risk either way.

The product matters too. Hyaluronic acid fillers differ in firmness: softer gels move with the lips and usually suit the body of the lip, while firmer ones hold a line. Many lip products contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which makes the injection more comfortable. Hyaluronic acid can also be dissolved by a doctor with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.

Not every filler belongs in the lips. Collagen stimulators such as PLLA work on a slower timescale and aren't used in the lips; our guide to Korean PLLA filler in Seoul explains where they fit. And sometimes a profile that looks unbalanced needs the chin addressed rather than more lip, as our post on how a dermatologist plans chin filler describes.

If you've had lip filler elsewhere, especially from a non-specialist, I'd look at what's already there before adding anything. Work done by non-specialists sometimes leaves marks that take longer to settle, and old filler can change both the plan and the recovery.

What decides the cost of lip filler for your case?

Lip filler cost in Korea comes down to the product, the amount, any old filler that has to be dissolved first and your days in Seoul. The product matters because hyaluronic acid fillers are priced differently. The amount is counted in syringes and depends on how much volume your lips need.

Old filler adds a step, and sometimes extra days, before anything new goes in. Treating the chin or the lines around the mouth on the same visit changes the total as well.

Ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case, with a front photo of your lips and the name of any filler you've had before.

Risks to know, and what to do once you're home

The common reactions are temporary: swelling, bruising, tenderness and small bumps along the injection points, which for most people settle within one to two weeks. People prone to cold sores can get a flare in the days after.

As general medicine, it's wiser to wait if you have an active cold sore, a pimple or an infection on or near the lips, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, if you're allergic to lidocaine or a filler ingredient, or if you have dental treatment planned within about two weeks. A past reaction to filler is also worth raising before anything is injected.

Rare problems are serious. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notes that filler can be injected into a blood vessel by accident, which can damage the skin and, rarely, cause vision problems or a stroke. Skin on or around the lip turning white, dusky or blotchy, or pain that gets worse instead of better, needs same-day medical attention.

Once you're home, keep a note of the product name, the amount and the date; the CDC advises medical travelers to carry copies of their records and arrange follow-up care before they leave. If a firm lump is still there after two weeks, or swelling returns weeks later, bring it to a dermatologist at home rather than a salon. Recovery varies from person to person.

If you'd like to start small, one daylight photo of your lips on WhatsApp is enough, along with the one question that worries you most, such as whether your old filler needs attention first. You can ask before booking anything. When you come in, a dermatologist examines your lips and recommends the product and amount that fit your face and your days in Seoul.

Questions people ask

Before you message us

Can I fly the day after lip filler?

There's no general rule against it, and normal cabin pressure isn't known to move hyaluronic acid filler. The concern is distance: if a firm spot or unusual swelling appears, you'd want to be near the doctor who injected you, so book the injection early in your trip.

When can I wear lipstick or kiss again?

Lip products can usually go back on once the injection points close, often by the next day. Keep pressure off your lips, including kissing, for the first day or two while the filler settles.

When will I see the final shape of my lips?

For many people the lips look largest on days one and two, most swelling fades within the first week, and the shape is close to final at around two weeks. Judge the result then, not on day two.

Can my lip filler plan be set before I arrive in Seoul?

Photos and your travel dates help with planning, but the plan and price are confirmed only after a dermatologist examines you in Seoul.

Are lip filler recovery tips different if I'm over 50?

The timeline is usually the same. Skin around the mouth can bruise more easily with age and with some medicines or supplements, so tell the doctor what you take and leave a few extra days before important photos.

Results and recovery vary by individual. Every treatment carries possible side effects, which are explained at the consultation. Prices are in Korean won, excluding 10% VAT, and confirmed at your consultation. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis.
