Chin filler: what it can reshape, and how a dermatologist plans it

Chin filler can balance the profile and slim the lower face. A dermatologist explains who it suits, how it's injected and what it can't do.

Chin filler: what can it actually change?

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, a board-certified dermatologist and chief director at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. I completed my residency at Seoul National University Hospital, earned my doctorate in dermatology at Seoul National University, and am an adjunct professor in its Department of Dermatology. Patients often ask me about chin filler, usually because something about their profile or lower face feels slightly out of balance.

The direct answer: chin filler places a small amount of volume at the chin to bring it forward, lengthen it slightly or refine its shape. At WELLS the chin is one of five filler areas, and the chin tip is refined for a slimmer face shape rather than simply made bigger.

In this post I will explain why the chin changes the whole face, who it suits, how I inject it, and when another tool is the better answer.

Why does a small change to the chin affect the whole face?

The chin is the end point of the lower face. When it sits a little short or set back, the lips can look more prominent, the jawline less defined and the lower face rounder than it really is. In profile, the line from the nose to the lips to the chin is one of the first things people notice, even if they could not tell you why.

Because of that, a modest amount of volume in the right place can make the lower face look longer and slimmer. The goal is proportion, not size; a chin that is made too large or too wide pulls the face out of balance in the other direction.

When people talk about a filler face, they usually mean a face where several areas have each been filled a little too much. The chin is no exception. I explain how that overfilled look develops in my colleague's post on pillow face filler.

Who chin filler suits, and who it doesn't

Chin fillers work best when the issue is structure: a chin that is short, flat in profile or slightly receding. They are less useful when the issue is fat, muscle or sagging skin.

  • Often a good fit: a short or set-back chin, a flat chin in profile, a mild asymmetry, or a lower face you would like to look slimmer and more defined.
  • Fat under the chin: a double chin is a different problem; adding volume in front of it rarely helps, and fat reduction or lifting is usually the conversation.
  • An enlarged jaw muscle: a wide, square lower face often comes from muscle, which neuromodulator can slim.
  • Sagging jowls: loose skin along the jawline usually needs lifting rather than volume.

People sometimes ask about filler in cheeks to lift jowls. Filling what is hollow can help the midface, but where the jawline sags, the principle I follow is to tidy what sags rather than keep adding volume. A thread lift or an ultrasound lifting treatment is often more honest for that.

How I inject chin filler at WELLS

Every filler at WELLS is placed by a board-certified dermatologist. We use a cannula where possible, because a cannula minimizes the vessel-damage risk of a standard needle. Filler restores volume immediately, but vascular complications are the risk to respect with any filler, and technique is how we reduce it.

Before anything starts, we confirm the product and the amount with you. I look at the chin from the front and in profile, at rest and while you speak or smile, and in relation to the nose and lips. The plan is usually conservative: it is easy to add a little more at a later visit, and much harder to take a shape back.

The full outline of areas and technique is on our dermal filler page. Individual results vary, and side effects are possible, which is why every treatment starts with a dermatologist consultation.

Send a photo from the front and one in profile, and tell us what bothers you about your chin. A dermatologist will suggest where to start.

Chin filler and anti-wrinkle injection: why we often pair them

A chin can look short partly because the muscle around it is tight, and a lower face can look wide because the jaw muscle is enlarged. Neuromodulator is used for expression lines and to slim enlarged muscles, so it often complements filler rather than competing with it.

On our filler page we note that combining with anti-wrinkle injection extends the result. At WELLS we use neuromodulator with US FDA approval only, and the dermatologist explains the product, its approved indications and potential risks. You can read more on our anti-wrinkle injection page.

Chin fillers, forehead filler and other areas: planning more than one

Many people considering chin fillers are also thinking about another area. The five areas we treat with filler each have a different aim.

Filler areas at WELLS and what each one aims for
AreaWhat we aim for
ForeheadVolume balanced so the face does not look larger
Under-eyeHollows treated with filler instead of surgery
Nasolabial foldsA large-particle, long-lasting filler
CheeksVolume tailored to your facial features
ChinChin tip refined for a slimmer face shape

Temples are not one of our listed filler areas, so if you have read about filler in temples to lift eyes, ask the dermatologist directly at consultation. For the upper face, my post on forehead filler explains how we keep the forehead in proportion.

The under-eye deserves its own caution: it is the thinnest skin on the face, and under eye filler migration is one of the main reasons people come to us for a second opinion. For the overall picture of areas, technique and how a visit works, see our guide to Korean filler in Seoul.

How long chin filler lasts, what it costs, and how a visit works

Hyaluronic acid filler gives volume straight away, but it is absorbed over time and the area gradually returns to where it started. It usually lasts around six months to a year, and how long it lasts varies from person to person.

If you would rather build volume slowly, a collagen stimulator such as Sculptra is a different approach: it works over several sessions rather than all at once. Whether that suits the chin is a decision for the consultation.

For dermal filler, the price is confirmed at your consultation, because it depends on the areas, the amount and the product. Prices at WELLS are in Korean won and exclude 10% VAT, and the dermatologist confirms your plan and the final price before anything starts.
