After lip filler how long does bruising last, day by day?

Planning lip filler in Seoul, and stuck on one thing: after lip filler how long does bruising last, and will it still show when you land back home?

Read this before you choose your flight.

You'll know how a bruise usually changes day by day, what decides the cost, what reviews get right and wrong, and which methods matter, so you can pick a trip length that fits your face and your budget.

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, Medical Director (M.D., Ph.D.) at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong.

At WELLS, a dermatologist handles both the consultation and the injection. Our dermatologists have over fifteen years of filler experience, use a cannula where possible, and confirm the product and amount with you before treatment.

I wrote this because people often fix the flight around the appointment, and the appointment is the shortest part of the plan.

Most lip bruises fade within about a week, and a slow one can take up to two weeks. So have the injection early in your trip, with several days left before you fly.

If your dates are already set, send them on WhatsApp and ask which day of your trip the injection should fall on. Your question then starts from your own calendar.

A bruise is blood from a small vessel leaking under the skin. Lips have a rich blood supply and thin tissue over it, so a small leak can show. Your body then clears that blood over several days, which is why the color shifts as it fades.

The FDA says swelling and bruising usually appear shortly after injection, and that many side effects resolve within a few days to several weeks. Cleveland Clinic says swelling usually settles in 24 to 48 hours but may take up to a week. The table below is the general pattern, and your own days may run faster or slower.

WhenWhat you may seeWhat it means for your trip
Injection daySwelling, tenderness, small entry marksIce for up to 10 minutes at a time; no lip products, straws, alcohol or exercise for 24 hours
Days 1–2Swelling at its most visible; a bruise may darkenKeep these days clear of photos and big plans
Days 3–5Swelling easing for many people; color turning green or yellowMakeup can usually hide what's left
Days 6–10Most bruises gone or faintA common point to feel ready to fly and go back to work
Days 11–14The slow bruises finishCount these days if you have a wedding or a shoot

Which methods and habits change how much lips bruise?

Both do, and you control part of it. A 2013 review on minimizing filler bruising cites a study linking three things to more bruising with hyaluronic acid filler: a fanning technique, a larger volume and a faster injection. Lips aren't a place to rush, and a modest first amount also means fewer passes.

Cannulas get talked about as the answer to bruising. The same review says some practitioners report less bruising with blunt microcannulas, but it found no direct comparison, and its authors saw no difference in their own experience. I prefer a cannula where possible for a different reason: it lowers the risk of damaging a vessel that a standard needle carries. Expect fewer risks, and still expect that you may bruise.

What you do in the two weeks before the trip counts too. The review describes common practice as follows:

  • Prescribed blood thinners: these usually shouldn't be stopped when you need them. Tell your dermatologist and expect more bruising.
  • Aspirin you don't medically need: hold it for one week beforehand, after checking with your own doctor.
  • Anti-inflammatory painkillers: avoid them for five days beforehand.
  • High-dose vitamin E, ginkgo and garlic supplements: many physicians advise stopping them two weeks ahead.

Combining areas changes the picture as well. Each added area means more entry points, so if you're also weighing how a dermatologist plans chin filler, mention both when you ask about timing.

How many days should you leave before your flight?

If you want your lips to pass unnoticed when you land, I'd leave five to seven days between injection and flight. If you have a wedding or photo shoot, I'd leave two weeks before that date. I don't know of a firm medical rule on flying after lip filler. My reason for the gap is that you stay close to the clinic during the days when questions come up.

Say you land on a Thursday night, fly out the next Thursday, and have video calls at work the following Monday. I'd aim for the Friday morning: the clinic opens at 10:00, you get six days before the flight, and the worst of the swelling passes while you're still in Seoul. Now move that injection to the Wednesday before you fly, and you'd likely board with swelling and a dark bruise, with nobody nearby to look at it.

Watch the calendar, too. We're open Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00 and Saturday 10:00–17:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00, and we're closed on Sundays and holidays. A Saturday injection means the next day, when swelling tends to be most visible, is a closed day.

Other treatments on the same trip need their own planning. Sculptra sessions follow a different schedule from lip filler, and if you're adding laser toning, ask at booking which should come first. Cleveland Clinic also suggests a follow-up about two weeks after lip filler, so ask how that would work once you're home.

If you bruise easily, list your medications and supplements and any previous filler in a WhatsApp message, then ask how many days your trip should leave after the injection. It keeps your own history in the question from the start.

What do reviews get right about lip filler bruising?

Threads answering lip filler how long does bruising last tend to repeat three claims.

"It's gone in 48 hours." This mixes up swelling and bruising. Swelling often settles in that window; a bruise that formed usually takes longer.

"A bruise means the injector made a mistake." On its own, it doesn't. Careful injecting can still catch a small vessel, and the review cites bruising rates that differ widely between studies. Lumps, overfill and migration are separate problems, and how cheek filler goes wrong is a useful read on those.

"Arnica makes it vanish." The evidence is thin. The review mentions some data for arnica, bromelain and vitamin K, but the arnica trial it cites looked at laser bruising, not filler, and its authors don't routinely use these topicals. Cold compresses and pressure right after injection are the usual advice, even though the review offers no direct filler data for cold compresses.

What decides the cost of lip filler in Seoul?

Lip filler cost comes down to four things:

  • The product: which filler suits the look you want.
  • The amount: how much your lips need, and whether other areas are treated at the same visit.
  • Old filler: whether any has to be dissolved first.
  • Your days in Seoul: extra nights for the bruise to settle are a real part of your trip budget.

For the figure in your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost and include a photo of your lips.

When a mark is more than a bruise

A bruise is a defined patch that gets less tender and changes color over days. The warning signs look and behave differently, and I want you to be able to tell them apart from your hotel room or your home.

Risks and side effects to know

Common temporary reactions are bruising, redness, swelling, pain and tenderness, and these usually ease within days to a few weeks. Cleveland Clinic also lists cold sore reactivation, infection, asymmetry and migration of filler. How quickly you recover differs from person to person.

Generally, you should hold off or discuss it first if you have an active infection or cold sore around the mouth, a bleeding disorder, severe allergies or a known allergy to lidocaine, or a tendency to form keloids. The FDA says safety is unknown during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and for people under 22.

The rare but serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel, which can block blood flow and cause tissue death, vision problems or stroke. The FDA says to get immediate medical attention for unusual pain, vision changes, skin near the injection site that looks white, gray or blue, or signs of stroke. If that happens after you've flown home, go straight to the nearest emergency department, then send the clinic your photos and treatment details on WhatsApp.

If a mark from filler done elsewhere isn't clearing, bring it to a dermatologist first. Work done by non-specialists sometimes leaves marks that take longer.

What to send before you book

One clear photo of your lips in daylight is enough to start, and you can ask before booking anything. Add the one question on your mind, whether that's the flight, the bruise or the amount, and send it on WhatsApp. When you come in, a dermatologist examines you and recommends the product and amount that fit your lips and your dates.

Questions people ask

Before you message us

After lip filler how long does bruising last if I take aspirin or a blood thinner?

Expect a higher chance of bruising, and possibly a slower fade. Don't stop a prescribed blood thinner on your own. Ask the doctor who prescribed it, and tell your dermatologist what you take.

Can I cover a lip bruise with makeup?

Cleveland Clinic advises avoiding lipstick, balm and other lip products for 24 hours. After that, makeup can usually hide a fading bruise. Keep your applicators clean, since the entry points are still healing.

Can I fly the day after lip filler?

I don't know of a firm medical rule against it, but I wouldn't plan it. Swelling tends to be most visible in the first two days, and you'd be far from the clinic if something unusual appears.

Does a bruise affect how the filler looks in the end?

A bruise is blood under the skin, so it doesn't usually change the final shape. Judge your lips once the swelling has settled. Cleveland Clinic suggests a follow-up about two weeks after treatment.

How long does lip filler itself last?

Cleveland Clinic says lip fillers typically last 12 to 18 months, depending on metabolism. Younger people tend to break filler down faster, so the effect may not last as long.

Results and recovery vary by individual. Every treatment carries possible side effects, which are explained at the consultation. Prices are in Korean won, excluding 10% VAT, and confirmed at your consultation. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis.
