Korean acne treatment: skincare vs clinic, and what a Seoul visit adds

What does Korean acne treatment actually mean?

When people search for Korean acne treatment, they usually mean one of two things: a Korean skincare routine for breakouts, or treatment at a dermatology clinic in Seoul. Both are real, but they do very different jobs, and mixing them up is why so many routines stall.

I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, a board-certified dermatologist with a Ph.D. in dermatology from Seoul National University, where I completed residency and later served as a clinical instructor. I'm now a chief director at WELLS in Apgujeong and an adjunct professor in the Department of Dermatology at Seoul National University Hospital.

My short answer: skincare keeps acne quiet, clinic treatment goes after the reason it keeps coming back. This post explains where one stops and the other starts, and how to use a trip to Seoul well.

Korean skincare for acne: what it can and cannot do

Korean beauty for acne has earned its reputation for gentle, consistent routines, and I'm in favour of that. In relatively stable periods, proper cleansing and topical medication are genuinely enough to keep acne under control.

Even without clinic visits, most early acne can be managed by disinfecting properly, extracting correctly and applying medication. The trouble starts with flare periods: around menstruation, under heavy stress or after poor sleep, acne can worsen, and that is when oral medication, laser treatment and in-clinic care are worth it.

One thing Korean skincare for acne cannot change is the sebaceous gland itself. Acne develops in sequence: excess sebum, a clogged pore, then bacterial infection. Creams and cleansers work on the surface of that chain; the gland underneath keeps producing.

Which Korean acne treatments does WELLS use, and for which acne?

Recurring, stubborn inflammatory acne usually points me toward Gold PTT. Someone who needs to walk out and carry on with the day may start with Blue PDT. Body acne on the back or chest is where peels earn their place.

Why Gold PTT is the Korean acne treatment I reach for with recurring breakouts

Gold PTT stands for photothermal therapy. Fine gold particles are delivered into the pore down to the sebaceous gland, then a near-infrared laser is applied. The particles absorb the light and turn it into heat, so the gland is targeted while the epidermis is spared as much as possible.

Not every Gold PTT is the same. Some systems use spherical particles; ours uses GNR, elongated gold nano rods. The particle shape changes how much heat the same laser energy produces. Rod-shaped particles have a larger light-absorbing area tuned to near-infrared light, so heat conversion is more efficient.

So when you compare clinics, ask which particle structure they use, not just whether they offer Gold PTT. The name on the menu tells you very little about how the treatment behaves.

Who should consider it? People with recurring acne, inflammatory acne that does not heal well, or breakouts that relapse soon after each course of treatment. I also don't like leaving inflamed, pustular acne alone for long, because it raises the chance of scarring, pigmentation and enlarged pores later.

Korean acne in sensitive, red or marked skin

The hardest cases are not the most severe ones. They are skin that has been inflamed so often it has become sensitive, where extraction or medication alone no longer prevents the next flare. Those faces need energy delivered selectively, with heat kept where it is needed and away from the skin around it.

Acne also leaves things behind. Lingering redness is a vascular problem and responds to the lasers in our rosacea and broken capillary treatment. Enlarged pores are treated separately with pore reduction, which restores dermal elasticity so pores tighten from underneath.

One caution: laser toning on pigmented acne marks can trigger new acne if it is used without judgement. Who holds the handpiece matters as much as the device.

Korean acne scar treatment comes after the acne is controlled

Many visitors want to deal with scars and active acne on the same trip. I understand why, but rebuilding the dermis while new inflammation keeps making new scars is how people pay twice. Active acne is controlled first.
