How does Gold PTT work, and why does the particle shape matter?

Gold PTT stands for photothermal therapy. Fine gold nanoparticles are delivered into the pores down to the sebaceous glands, then a near-infrared laser is applied. The gold absorbs the light, turns it into heat, and selectively damages the sebaceous gland while limiting injury to the surface skin.

I describe it to patients as placing a small heat source inside the problem room and pressing a button from outside, so only that room is affected. Older acne care relied on oral antibiotics, ointments, extraction, PDT and peels; Gold PTT lets us treat only the area that needs it.

Not every treatment called Gold PTT is the same. Some systems use spherical particles, while ours uses rod-shaped GNR (Gold Nano Rod) particles, which have a larger light-absorbing area tuned to near-infrared wavelengths.
