Restylane Filler How to Choose a Clinical Specialist? Pick the Injector Before the Brand, Plus Cost, Reviews and Methods
Choose the person before the product. A board-certified specialist who names the exact filler, layer and amount before injecting, and can manage a blocked vessel, matters more than the Restylane label.

Does the Restylane name on the syringe decide your result?
Restylane filler how to choose a clinical specialist: does the brand on the syringe keep your face safe, or does the person holding it?
Read this before you message any clinic in Seoul.
By the end you'll know what a filler brand does and doesn't decide, which injection methods lower the risk, what drives the cost for your face, and which common review claims hold up. That's enough to pick an injector who fits your face and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, Medical Director · M.D., Ph.D. at WELLS Clinic. I completed my dermatology residency and board certification at Seoul National University Hospital.
WELLS has been in Apgujeong since 2008, and it's our only location. Filler here is injected by dermatologists, with a cannula where possible, and the product and amount are confirmed with you before treatment. Consultations in the clinic are available in English.
I wrote this because many people choose a filler brand first and an injector second, and that order is backwards.
Choose the person first: a board-certified specialist who examines your face, tells you the exact product, layer and amount before the needle goes in, and knows how to manage a blocked vessel. The brand belongs in that conversation, after the diagnosis.
If one area has been bothering you for a while, send a daylight photo of it on WhatsApp and ask one question: what kind of filler, and roughly how much, would a dermatologist consider for this spot? Replies on WhatsApp are in English.
Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.
Send a photo of the area and ask which filler fits
On its own, no. Restylane is a family of hyaluronic acid (HA) gels, and the products inside that family differ in firmness and in how far they spread once injected. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists it among several HA filler lines. In the US, the FDA approves each filler product for specific uses, which is why one brand name covers gels meant for very different jobs.
So a booking that says "Restylane" tells you the gel family. It doesn't tell you which gel, which layer of your face, how much, or with what tool. The brand names the gel family; the injector decides the layer, the amount and the tool. Those four choices are where both results and complications come from.
A soft gel made for fine lip lines can look shapeless when it's asked to support a cheek. A firm gel placed too close to the surface can show as a ridge or a faint bluish shadow. For nasolabial folds, for example, I use a large-particle, long-lasting filler, because that area needs structure more than softness.
If you have a particular brand in mind, ask on WhatsApp whether it's currently used here. The product and amount are confirmed with you before treatment, so nothing is chosen behind your back.
Restylane filler how to choose a clinical specialist: what the title should mean
In Korea, "specialist" has a defined meaning: a doctor who completed residency in a specialty and passed its board exam. For filler, the relevant specialties are usually dermatology and plastic surgery. Any licensed doctor may inject filler, so a clinic's name or sign alone won't tell you whether the person injecting you is a specialist. The American Academy of Dermatology also advises choosing a board-certified dermatologist for filler.
Before you book anywhere, ask four things:
- Is the doctor who will inject me board-certified in dermatology or plastic surgery, and what is their name?
- Which exact product and how much will go in, and will I be told before treatment?
- Needle or cannula for my area, and why?
- If a vessel is blocked, is hyaluronidase on hand, and who do I contact after I fly home?
If you've had filler from a non-specialist that left a lump or a shadow, take it to a dermatologist before adding anything. Marks from that kind of work sometimes take longer to settle, and new filler on top can hide the problem without fixing it.
The same questions work for other injections too, as in the piece on choosing a clinic for sweating injections in Korea. For how a first visit to a dermatology clinic here runs, the Seoul skin clinic guide walks through it.
Which injection methods lower the risk?
The serious filler complications are mostly about vessels. A blunt-tipped cannula is less likely than a sharp needle to pierce a blood vessel, which is why our dermatologists use a cannula where possible. A fine needle still has a place where a few tiny, precise deposits are needed, such as a small point on the chin.
The rest is anatomy and patience. Small amounts, slow injection, and knowing which layer each vessel runs in all lower the odds of trouble. HA gels have one more safety margin: an enzyme called hyaluronidase can break them down if a gel is misplaced or blocks a vessel.
Say you're 45, you have deep folds beside your mouth and hollows under your eyes, and you fly home on day 6. Folds often deepen partly because the cheek above has lost support, so I'd look at the cheek before filling the fold itself. Under-eye hollows can be treated with filler instead of surgery, but that skin is thin and bruises easily, so with only six days I'd usually think about treating the folds on this trip and leaving the under-eye area for a longer visit. Combining filler with an anti-wrinkle injection can also extend how long the result lasts.
For how this reasoning plays out in one area, see how a dermatologist plans chin filler.
Risks and side effects to know
The common reactions are temporary: swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising at the injection points. For chin filler, swelling and bruising can take 7 to 14 days to settle; for lips, swelling usually settles within 24 to 48 hours and can take up to a week. The FDA lists rare but serious risks as well, including filler entering a blood vessel, which can damage skin or, very rarely, affect vision.
As general medical guidance, it's usually wiser to wait or skip filler if you have an infection, cold sore or rash in the area, if you've had a laser or peel there recently, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you've reacted to an ingredient before (many HA gels contain lidocaine). Blood-thinning medicines and some supplements make bruising more likely, a point reviewed by Hamman and Goldman; tell the doctor, and never stop a prescribed medicine without your own doctor's advice.
If something changes after you're home, the signs that need same-day emergency care are increasing pain, skin turning pale or dusky purple, or any change in vision. A lump or uneven swelling is less urgent: take clear photos and see a local dermatologist. The CDC advises travelers to plan follow-up care at home before the trip and carry copies of their records, so ask for the product name and amount written down before you leave Seoul.
If you've had filler before, send the product name if you know it and a side-view photo in daylight, and ask whether what's already there changes the plan for this trip.
Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.
Send a photo of the area and ask which filler fitsWhat decides the cost of filler for your face
Cost follows the plan, so it's set by the same choices that set the result:
- the type of product your areas need, since a firm structural gel and a soft fine-line gel are different products
- how much is needed, and how many areas are treated in one visit
- whether old filler needs dissolving first
- whether an anti-wrinkle injection is combined to extend the result
- how many days you'll spend in Seoul, including a spare day for swelling
Prices at WELLS are listed in Korean won and exclude VAT, and the dermatologist confirms your plan and the final price at the consultation before anything starts. To get a figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your areas, with one front-facing photo attached.

What do filler reviews get right, and what do they miss?
Forum and review threads about filler tend to repeat three claims.
"Filler can cause blindness." This is true, and it's rare. It happens when gel enters a vessel connected to the eye, and it's the main reason vessel anatomy, cannula use and hyaluronidase matter more than the brand.
"HA filler is completely gone in six months." Partly true. The visible effect fades over months, and how fast varies with the product and the area. Some gel can stay in the tissue longer than the visible result, which is one reason a dermatologist checks for old filler before adding more.
"One brand always looks more natural." Not quite. What looks overdone is usually too much product, or a gel placed in the wrong layer for that area. Asking the amount up front protects you more than asking for a particular label.
Planning filler around your days in Seoul
WELLS is open Monday to Friday 10:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 17:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00, and is closed on Sundays and Korean public holidays. We're on the 8th floor of the Apgujeong building, about five minutes on foot from Apgujeong Station (Line 3) Exit 3.
Because swelling and bruising need days to settle, book your filler early in the trip, not the day before your flight. If you're thinking about lifting on the same trip as well, read how to choose an Ultherapy clinic in Korea before you split the days between treatments.
If you typed "Restylane filler how to choose a clinical specialist" because you're comparing clinics from home, the easiest first step is small. Send one daylight photo of the area and your travel dates on WhatsApp, and ask which product and amount a dermatologist would consider for you. One photo is enough, and you can ask before booking anything. When you come in, a dermatologist examines your face and recommends the product and amount that fit it.

Is a cannula always safer than a needle?
A blunt cannula is less likely to pierce a blood vessel, which lowers one of the more serious risks. A fine needle is still useful for small, precise deposits in some spots. The choice is made per area, and you can ask which tool will be used and why.
How long does an HA filler like Restylane last?
HA fillers are temporary. The visible effect usually fades over several months to around a year or more, with firmer gels in less mobile areas often lasting longer. Combining filler with an anti-wrinkle injection can extend the result.
Can hyaluronic acid filler be dissolved?
Yes. HA gels can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It's used when a gel is misplaced or looks uneven, and urgently if a vessel is blocked.
Do you inject Restylane at WELLS?
The product and amount are confirmed with you before treatment, based on the area and what it needs. If you have a specific brand in mind, ask on WhatsApp whether it's currently used here.
How soon can I fly after filler?
Many people fly within a few days, but swelling and bruising take time. For chin filler they can take 7 to 14 days to settle, so plan your treatment early in your Seoul trip.
Results and recovery vary by individual. Every treatment carries possible side effects, which are explained at the consultation. Prices are in Korean won, excluding 10% VAT, and confirmed at your consultation. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis.
