Korean Lip Filler vs Juvederm: What Actually Differs? Recovery, Cost, Reviews and Follow-Up at Home
Korean lip filler and Juvederm are both hyaluronic acid gels that can be dissolved. In the lips, the amount, the depth and any old filler matter more than the brand or the country.

What is the real difference in Korean lip filler vs Juvederm?
Comparing Korean lip filler vs Juvederm because your last lips came out lumpy or uneven, and you're wondering whether the product was the problem?
Read this before you choose a brand or book the flight.
By the end you'll know what really separates the two kinds of gel, how long swelling and a bruised lip last on a short trip, what decides the cost and which review claims hold up. That makes it easier to choose a plan that suits your lips and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, Medical Director (M.D., Ph.D.) at WELLS Clinic in Seoul.
I'm a board-certified dermatologist trained at Seoul National University Hospital. At WELLS, a dermatologist consults and injects, we use a cannula where possible because it lowers the vessel-injury risk of a standard needle, and we confirm the product and amount with you before treatment. We've been in Apgujeong since 2008.
I wrote this because when lips go wrong, the brand usually takes the blame, while the amount, the depth and the filler already in the lip tend to explain far more.
Juvederm is a family of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers made by Allergan. “Korean lip filler” usually means a Korean-made HA gel, or a softer, rounder Korean shaping style. Both are HA, both can be dissolved with an enzyme, and in the lips the injection plan matters more than the country on the box.
If a past result is why you're here, send a daylight photo of your lips from the front and the side on WhatsApp, with the product name and date of your last injection if you have them. Ask one question: is there old filler that should come out first? That way the conversation starts from your own lips and history.
Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.
Send a daylight lip photo on WhatsAppAll HA fillers start from the same sugar molecule your skin already makes. What changes from product to product is how the HA chains are cross-linked, how firm the gel is, how far it spreads, and whether lidocaine is mixed in for comfort. Lip products are usually softer gels than the ones used on a chin or jawline, because lips move all day when you talk and eat.
Juvederm's lip products and many Korean-made HA fillers sit in that same soft range. The bigger difference for you is regulatory. In the US, the FDA approves specific filler products for specific uses, and in Korea the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety approves what is sold there. A product approved in Korea may be one your doctor at home has never handled, and that matters if you need help after you fly back.
So I'd put more weight on three questions than on the label: how much goes in on this visit, at what depth, and whether earlier filler is still in the lip. A small amount of soft gel, placed at the right depth, is easier to live with and easier to correct than a large amount of any brand.
Having lip filler in Seoul vs at home: what changes
The injection itself is short. What changes when you have it abroad is everything around it.
At home you can go back in two weeks for a touch-up or a check. In Seoul you may have one visit and then a long flight. That's why, for a traveler, I lean toward a conservative amount done early in the trip, instead of the full volume in one sitting the day before you leave.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises medical travelers to carry copies of their records and to plan follow-up care at home before they go. For filler, that means leaving Seoul with the product name and the amount written down, and knowing which dermatologist at home you would see if something feels off.
If you're also thinking about your under-eyes on the same trip, that area follows different rules, which I cover in Korean under eye filler in Seoul and who it suits.

How long do a bruised lip and swelling last?
Lips have a dense blood supply, so bruising and swelling are common even with careful technique. The American Academy of Dermatology lists bruising, swelling and redness among the usual side effects of fillers. For many people, swelling is most visible in the first two or three days and largely settles within about a week; a bruise can take a little longer to fade. Lips often look bigger and slightly uneven at first, so I'd wait around two weeks before judging the shape.
Risks and side effects to know
Say you land in Seoul on a Saturday and fly home the following Sunday. We're open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00, and closed on Sundays and holidays. Booking the injection on Monday gives you most of a week for swelling to come down, and you can save the photo-heavy days for the end of the trip. If you only have a long weekend, I'd suggest a smaller amount, or keeping the lips for a longer visit.
For the first day, skip hard exercise, saunas and alcohol, and don't press or massage the lips unless you were told to. A cold pack wrapped in cloth, used for a few minutes at a time, helps with swelling.
When lip filler goes wrong: nodules, allergy and vascular occlusion
Most reactions are temporary. Swelling, tenderness and small bumps you can feel in the first two weeks usually come from fluid around the gel and settle without treatment.
Less often, a lump stays. Early nodules are usually product placed too close to the surface or too much in one spot, and HA can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. A lump that appears weeks or months later, especially if it's red or tender, can be inflammatory and needs a doctor to examine it. A true allergy to HA is uncommon, but people can react to lidocaine or other components, and some notice delayed swelling after a cold or dental work.
The rare emergency is vascular occlusion, when filler blocks or presses on an artery. The FDA warns that injection into a blood vessel can cause serious complications. Signs are skin turning white, then blotchy blue or purple, with pain out of proportion to a normal filler. This needs a doctor the same day, because HA can be dissolved and time matters.
Who should wait or talk it through first:
- an active cold sore, pimple or infection on or around the lips
- a history of cold sores, since injection can trigger one (ask about a preventive antiviral)
- pregnancy or breastfeeding
- allergy to lidocaine, or a past reaction to filler
- dental work planned in the days around the injection
If something appears after you fly home, a lump or asymmetry can usually wait two weeks for swelling to settle before you see a dermatologist with the product name. Color change with strong pain cannot wait; go to an emergency department and say you had HA filler in your lips and when. Filler that drifts above the lip border behaves much like under eye filler migration and how it's assessed, and repeated top-ups are also how faces start to look heavy, as I explain in why faces look overfilled after filler.
If you have filler in your lips now and something feels off, like a firm bead or a shadow above the border, take a close-up in daylight with your lips relaxed and send it on WhatsApp with the date of your last injection. Ask whether it's worth dissolving before anything new goes in.
Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.

There is no single lip price, because what you pay follows what your lips need:
- The product. Which HA gel fits your lips, and how firm it needs to be.
- The amount. Lips often need less than people expect, and a smaller first amount costs less than a full correction.
- Old filler. If earlier filler has to be dissolved first, that is a separate step, and fresh filler usually waits until the area has settled.
- Other areas. Adding cheeks, chin or under-eyes on the same visit changes the plan.
- Your days in Seoul. They decide whether a second look before your flight fits.
Photos help us suggest options and timing, and the plan and price are confirmed after a dermatologist examines you in Seoul. For a figure that fits your own lips, ask on WhatsApp what the amount you have in mind would cost, and mention whether any old filler is still there.
What do lip filler reviews get right and wrong?
Most review threads on Korean lip filler vs Juvederm come down to four claims.
“Korean filler dissolves faster.” How long lip filler lasts follows the specific product's cross-linking, the amount and how much your lips move. It belongs to the product, not the country. For many people, lip HA softens over roughly six months to a year.
“Lumps mean the filler was fake.” Early lumps are most often swelling or placement. A genuine product placed too shallow can still be felt.
“Bruising means a bad injector.” Lips bruise easily, and bruising happens even when the technique is careful.
“Korean filler can't be fixed at home.” HA fillers, Korean-made or Juvederm, respond to hyaluronidase. What your doctor at home needs is the product name and the amount, which is why you should leave with both written down.
Lip lines, shape ideas and when filler isn't the tool
Vertical lines above the lip often come from years of puckering. A very soft HA can soften fine lines, but deeper ones may also need a small dose of anti-wrinkle injection to relax the muscle; at WELLS we use only FDA-approved neuromodulator for that. Shape ideas you've saved are useful to bring, but your lip anatomy decides how much shape a thin upper lip can carry without looking stretched.
Collagen-building fillers such as PLLA belong in the cheeks and temples, not the lips. If that's on your list, Sculptra sessions and trip planning are a separate decision.
When you're ready, send on WhatsApp two daylight photos of your lips (front and side, relaxed), the names and dates of any fillers you've had, and your travel dates, with the one question on your mind, such as how much your lips can take in one visit. You can ask before booking anything. When you come in, a dermatologist examines your lips and recommends the product and amount that fit.

Can Korean filler be dissolved if I'm unhappy once I'm home?
If it's a hyaluronic acid filler, yes. HA fillers, whether Korean-made or Juvederm, respond to hyaluronidase. Bring the product name and the amount to your dermatologist at home so they know what they're treating.
Can I fly the day after lip filler?
There's no general medical rule against flying the day after HA filler. Your lips may feel tight or swollen for a day or two, so many travelers prefer to have the injection early in the trip and leave a few days before the flight.
I get cold sores. Can I still have lip filler?
Usually, but not during an active cold sore, and injection can trigger one. Mention your history before treatment and ask whether a preventive antiviral makes sense for you.
Which lip filler products does WELLS use?
We confirm the product and amount with you before treatment. Ask on WhatsApp which lip products are currently available, and bring the name of anything you've had before.
Should I dissolve old lip filler before getting new filler in Seoul?
If old filler has drifted above the lip border or feels firm, dissolving it first often gives a cleaner result, and new filler then usually waits until the area settles. Whether that applies to you is decided after the dermatologist examines your lips.
Results and recovery vary by individual. Every treatment carries possible side effects, which are explained at the consultation. Prices are in Korean won, excluding 10% VAT, and confirmed at your consultation. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis.
