Is a Korean Laser Hair Removal Machine Worth a Seoul Trip? Cost, Reviews and Methods
A Korean laser hair removal machine such as Clarity, made by Korea's Lutronic, carries 755 nm and 1064 nm lasers. The machine matters less than your skin, your hair color and how often you can return to Seoul.

Is there a Korean machine that works better than the one at home?
Wondering whether a Korean laser hair removal machine is worth planning a Seoul trip around? Read on before you book flights or a session.
After this you will know what the machine does and doesn't decide, how the methods fit your skin and hair, what the cost depends on, and what review threads claim compared with what is medically true. That should help you decide whether your trips to Seoul can be spaced the way your hair needs.
Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, Medical Director · M.D., Ph.D. at WELLS.
WELLS Clinic has been in Apgujeong, Gangnam, since 2008. A dermatologist does your consultation and your treatment, and we don't use sleep anesthesia where it isn't needed.
Most people ask about the machine because they assume a Korean brand name decides the result.
In short: our Korean laser, Clarity from Lutronic, is a medical laser built around the wavelengths hair removal relies on. Hair grows in cycles and each visit reaches only the hairs in their growing phase, so one trip is one session of a series.
Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.
Send a photo of the area and your Seoul monthsLaser hair removal works the same way on any properly built medical laser. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, turns into heat, and that heat damages the follicle that makes the hair; the medical term is selective photothermolysis, described in the NCBI StatPearls review of laser hair removal. What differs between machines is which wavelengths they carry, how long each pulse lasts and how they cool the skin.
The label “Korean laser hair removal machine” is accurate as far as it goes. The FDA's 510(k) record for the Clarity II system lists Lutronic Corporation of Goyang, Republic of Korea, as the applicant, with a 755 nm alexandrite and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser in one unit. Clarity holds US FDA, European CE and Korean KFDA approval, so the same device family is cleared well beyond Korea, and the hardware alone isn't a reason to fly.
What changes your result is how the settings are chosen for your skin and hair. I trained and was board-certified in dermatology at Seoul National University Hospital, and the thing I'd look at first is your skin tone, any recent tan and the color of the hair, long before the machine. Skin on the back is thicker than skin along the jaw and recovers at a different pace, so I'd decide settings per area rather than from a template.

755 nm, 1064 nm, and what your skin type has to do with it
| Wavelength | What it's generally chosen for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 755 nm (alexandrite) | Lighter skin with dark hair, finer hair | Skin pigment absorbs more of it, so tanned or darker skin needs caution |
| 1064 nm (Nd:YAG) | Darker or tanned skin, deeper and coarser hair | Reaches deeper, is often felt as more uncomfortable and does less for fine hair |
In practice, dermatologists generally lean toward 1064 nm as skin gets darker, because it passes the pigment in the top layer of skin more readily. The 1064 nm laser is also cleared for pseudofolliculitis barbae, the razor bumps many men get along the jaw and neck from daily shaving.
One limit no machine gets around is that the laser needs pigment in the hair. Blond, gray, white and many red hairs have too little of it and respond poorly on any device, a point the American Society of Plastic Surgeons also makes. If most of the hair you want gone has turned gray, that's worth knowing before you plan a trip around it.
Why one trip can't finish it
Hair grows in cycles of growing, resting and shedding, and at any moment only part of your follicles are in the growing phase the laser can reach. That's why laser hair removal is done as a series of sessions spaced weeks apart. Each one reduces the hair a little more, and regrowth tends to come back finer and lighter.
For a traveler, that turns into arithmetic: one trip is one session, and one session alone is a start. The series fits people who already pass through Seoul every couple of months for work or family, because sessions can ride along with trips they're making anyway.
How the series is planned for men visiting Seoul is laid out in men's laser hair removal at WELLS and how to plan it.
Say you live in Singapore, you have dark, coarse hair along your beard line and neck, and you are in Seoul two or three times a year. I would first look at your skin: does it tan easily or burn, and is the hair darker than the skin around it? That tells me which wavelength suits you and how cautious to be. Then I would look at the calendar, because hair is only reached while it is growing.
If your trips are many months apart, the series simply stretches across more visits, and I would tell you that plainly rather than suggest one trip can do it all.
What does a session on Clarity feel like?
Most areas are done without anesthesia, in about ten minutes. Clarity's intelligent cooling lowers pain and burn risk, and the laser is non-contact, so it never touches your skin and there are no shared tips. Each pulse is often described as a rubber band snapping against the skin, followed by a few minutes of warmth.
The general preparation is to shave the area shortly before, as your dermatologist directs, and to stop waxing, plucking or epilating for weeks beforehand, because the laser needs the hair root in place. Arrive without a fresh tan. A session on a beach weekend is a poor idea, since sun on freshly treated skin raises the risk of pigment changes.
We're open Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00 and Saturday 10:00–17:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00, and closed on Sundays and public holidays. The clinic is five minutes on foot from Exit 3 of Apgujeong Station on Line 3, so a ten-minute session fits around a working day in Seoul.
If you've had laser hair removal before, add the device name, how many sessions you had and how your skin reacted to your WhatsApp message. Ask whether that history changes where you'd start.
Send a clear photo and your travel dates, and we will tell you what fits the time you have in Seoul.
Send a photo of the area and your Seoul monthsWhat decides the cost of laser hair removal on a Korean machine?
The cost depends on a few things you can describe before you travel. The first is the area: a small area like the upper lip and a large one like the back are very different amounts of work. The second is how many sessions your hair needs, since hair is cleared in stages as it enters its growing phase. The third is your skin tone and hair colour, which affect the wavelength we choose and how cautiously we set the laser.
Whether you can come back at the right interval matters too, because it changes how the sessions are planned across your trips to Seoul. To get the figure for your case, send a daylight photo of the area on WhatsApp and ask for it there.
Risks and side effects to know
Redness and small bumps around each follicle are common for a few hours to a couple of days. Less often, the skin blisters or burns, or patches turn darker or lighter than the surrounding skin. These pigment changes are more likely on tanned or darker skin and usually fade over weeks to months, though some take longer.
Rarely, hair grows thicker near a treated area instead of thinning, an effect called paradoxical hypertrichosis. Lasers can also injure the eye, which is why you wear protective eyewear and why treatment close to the eyes calls for particular caution.
Results vary from person to person, and whether laser suits your skin and hair is decided at the in-person exam. Before you travel, know which dermatologist at home you'd see if something looks wrong after you fly back; the CDC's medical tourism advice recommends arranging follow-up care before the trip.
Is a home laser or IPL device from Korea the same thing?
Search for a Korean laser hair removal machine online and much of what comes up is built for home use. Most of these are IPL, which uses a broad band of filtered light rather than a single laser wavelength, or low-power diode devices. They run at lower energy so that people without training can use them, which usually means slower, more modest reduction and ongoing top-up use.
The same physics applies at home as in a clinic: light hair responds poorly, and tanned or darker skin is where burns and pigment changes are most likely. If you have darker skin, read the device's skin-tone chart before the first flash, and see a dermatologist if a patch darkens.
What else do people mean by “Korean laser treatment”?
Much of what's searched as Korean laser treatment has nothing to do with hair. Pico lasers and laser toning are mostly for pigment and tattoos, and vascular lasers are for redness. At WELLS, PicoSure Pro is used for tattoo removal, including fading old eyebrow tattoos with pico lasers.
Redness and broken capillaries go to vascular lasers, and Clarity is part of that line-up too; vascular lasers for rosacea and broken capillaries explains how they're used. Brown spots are a diagnosis question before they're a laser question, because spots that look alike can have different causes, which is the point of diagnosing each age spot before choosing a laser.
If you'd like to check whether your trips fit, send a daylight close-up of the area and the hair on it on WhatsApp, plus one line on whether your skin tans easily or burns, and the months you expect to be in Seoul. Ask one question with it: how far apart do sessions on this area usually need to be? One photo is enough, and you can ask before booking anything. When you come to the clinic, I will examine your skin and hair and recommend what fits you.

Which Korean laser hair removal machine does WELLS use?
Men's laser hair removal at WELLS is done on Clarity, a dual-wavelength laser with US FDA, European CE and KFDA approval. It uses intelligent cooling to lower pain and burn risk, and it's non-contact, so no tips are shared between patients.
How many sessions does laser hair removal take?
Several, spaced weeks apart, because only hairs in their growing phase respond at each visit. The number for you is set at the exam, after the dermatologist sees the area, your skin and the color and thickness of the hair.
Does laser hair removal work on gray or blond hair?
Poorly. The laser targets pigment in the hair, and gray, white, blond and many red hairs have too little of it. This holds for any laser, not only one brand.
Can I fly or go out in the sun after a session?
Flying is generally fine. Sun is the bigger concern: treated skin is more prone to pigment changes, so use broad-spectrum sunscreen, cover the area and avoid tanning for the following weeks.
Results and recovery vary by individual. Every treatment carries possible side effects, which are explained at the consultation. Prices are in Korean won, excluding 10% VAT, and confirmed at your consultation. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis.
