Scalp treatment in Seoul: what actually helps thinning hair

What a medical scalp treatment can and cannot do for thinning hair, and how we plan one at Wells Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul.

Why does thinning hair send people looking for a scalp treatment?

Most people who ask me about scalp treatment are not bald. They are watching their parting widen, their ponytail get thinner, or their hairline lose the fine baby hairs it used to have. The hair is still there — it is just finer, weaker and less shiny than it was two years ago.

That is the stage where treatment is worth doing, and it is also the stage where people waste the most money on shampoos and clinic "programs" nobody explained to them. I am Dr. Hyo Seop Ryu, one of the chief directors at Wells, and this post is what I would tell you across the consultation desk.

At Wells we take the view that treatment should begin when hair becomes sparse, fine or dull — not when the scalp is already visible from across the room. Earlier is simply easier to work with.

What does a medical scalp treatment actually do?

A scalp treatment in a dermatology clinic is not a head massage with a nice scent. It is an attempt to change the environment the follicle lives in, and to deliver molecules into the scalp that a topical product cannot reach on its own.

Our hair-ageing program supplies signalling molecules and nutrients so the stem cells that build the hair root can regenerate — the aim being better shine, thickness and density, and a slower progression of hair loss. Generally speaking, follicles respond to what reaches them, not to what sits on the surface.

The three components we work with

  • Growth-factor infiltration — delivered into the scalp rather than applied on top of it
  • EMTS (electrical microneedle stimulation) — used alongside the infiltration
  • Cause-targeted prescriptions — blended to your stage of hair loss

How those three are mixed depends entirely on what we find on your scalp. Read the full protocol on the hair-loss and hair-ageing care page — consultation and treatment there are done by a dermatologist with fifteen years of experience in this area.

What is CeraXosome, and why is it only at Wells?

CeraXosome is an exosome developed by our own dermatologist, Dr. Won Woo Choi, through CutisBio. It is the scalp treatment I reach for when the hair is thinning and weak rather than absent.

The mechanism work has been published in Experimental Dermatology and was presented at the World Congress for Hair Research 2026. It is patented in Korea with an international application filed, made by precision fermentation with no petrochemicals or preservatives, and suitable for men and women.

I want to be honest about what that table is: laboratory and ex vivo follicle data, not a promise about your head. It tells you the molecule does something measurable to follicle biology. What it does on your scalp depends on your stage of hair loss, your general health and how consistent you are.

What happens during a scalp treatment session at Wells?

The CeraXosome Scalp & Hair Program is one in-clinic session followed by three months of home care. Here is the order it runs in.

1. Scalp microbiome test and photographs

We take a baseline analysis of the scalp and standardised photographs of the hairline and vertex. This matters more than people expect — without a baseline, nobody can tell six months later whether anything changed.

2. CeraXosome infiltration, AQ injection and electromagnetic therapy

CeraXosome is delivered into the scalp with a fine microneedle system after lidocaine spray. One vial contains over 10¹⁰ CeraEV vesicles. Lidocaine spray goes on the hairline — and the crown if we treat it — three minutes before the infiltration.

3. Three months of home care

Daily NMN, spermidine and keratin chews — three boxes — support the activated follicles between visits. In the clinical program, infiltration is repeated every two weeks; the package price covers one in-clinic session plus the three months of chews, and I tell you at consultation how many sessions your case actually calls for.

Send a photo of your parting or hairline and I will tell you whether this is a scalp treatment case or something that needs a different approach first.

How much does scalp treatment in Seoul cost at Wells?

For the Wells-developed program, the number is published rather than quoted behind a door.

CeraXosome Scalp & Hair Program
What's includedPrice
Scalp microbiome test + in-clinic session + NMN chews ×3 boxes₩770,000 (VAT excluded)

All prices at Wells are in Korean won and exclude 10% VAT, and the dermatologist confirms your plan and the final price at consultation, before anything starts. For the broader hair-loss and hair-ageing program, the price is confirmed at your consultation because the components differ so much between patients.

If you are comparing a one-off session with a longer plan, ask on WhatsApp before you book flights. It is easier to arrange the visit around a realistic schedule than to redesign it once you are here.

Who is a good candidate for korean scalp treatment — and who isn't?

The CeraXosome program is built for a specific set of situations, and it is worth checking yourself against the list honestly.

  • Thinning at the hairline or crown
  • Fine, weak hair losing volume
  • Post-partum or post-menopausal shedding
  • Care after a hair transplant

If your concern is something else entirely — an itchy, inflamed or flaking scalp, or a rash that comes and goes — that is a medical diagnosis question first. Skin diseases that look alike can have different causes and stages, so I would examine the scalp before any program is discussed at all.

I would also say this plainly: no scalp treatment replaces a diagnosis. If I think medication or a different route serves you better, I will say so at the consultation rather than sell you a package.

How does a visit work if you are flying into Seoul?

Wells is on the 8th floor of the Apgujeong Building, 842 Nonhyeon-ro, Gangnam-gu — about five minutes on foot from Apgujeong Station, Line 3, Exit 3. We have been in Apgujeong since 2008.

Hours are Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00 and Saturday 10:00–17:00, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. We are closed on Sundays and Korean public holidays, which catches out a lot of short-trip visitors.

The sequence is simple: message us on WhatsApp with your concern, photos if you like, and your travel dates. You get a reply in English with a suggested plan and available times, then a dermatologist examines your scalp in person and confirms the plan and price before treatment. Consultations at the clinic are available in English, so you can plan the whole visit without a translator.

Four things I would ask any clinic before booking

Scalp programs are easy to sell and hard to compare. These are the questions I would put to any clinic, including this one.

  • Who performs it? At Wells, consultation, diagnosis and treatment are done by a board-certified dermatologist — not handed to a nurse or aesthetician.
  • Is there a baseline? Ask whether they photograph and analyse the scalp before starting, and whether they will repeat it.
  • What exactly is in the vial or ampoule? You are entitled to know what is being put into your scalp and where it came from.
  • What happens between visits? A single session with no home plan is a weaker plan than one with follow-through.

Wells is certified by the Korean Dermatological Association — the mark at the entrance is issued only to dermatologist-run clinics. Our four dermatologists are listed with their full training on the doctors page, and you can see the whole hair and body menu on the body and hair category page.

My own background is in dermatology at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, where I was a clinical instructor and then assistant professor before joining Wells as chief director. I mention it only because you should know who is answering your questions.
