Korean skin boosters for glow, or an energy device? A dermatologist's view

Dr. Won Woo Choi on whether Korean skin boosters for glow are enough, or whether firmness and pores need an energy device too, from his 2025 Dong-A Edu interview.

Are Korean skin boosters for glow enough on their own?

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Woo Choi, a board-certified dermatologist (M.D., Ph.D.) and Chief Director at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. I trained at Seoul National University Hospital, where I am now an adjunct professor of dermatology. Many visitors message me asking for Korean skin boosters for glow, and my first question back is always what they mean by glow.

Here is my direct answer. Glow is usually three things together: hydration, smooth texture and firm skin that reflects light evenly. A skin booster is excellent for the first two. If firmness or enlarged pores are part of the problem, an energy-based treatment often does more, and the best result can come from combining them.

So a booster alone is enough for some faces and not for others. Below is how I tell the difference.

What I told Dong-A Edu about firmness, hydration and glow

In August 2025 I was quoted in Dong-A Edu (동아일보 교육) in an article about tailored anti-aging. The interest it described is one I see every day: people want to look fresher in a natural way that suits their own face, without much time off a busy schedule.

The article focused on combining Genius, a microneedle radiofrequency device, with a second energy treatment for hydration and glow. The idea was to restore firmness while also improving moisture and radiance in the same plan.

That caution applies just as much to boosters. A good plan starts with what your skin needs, not with a product name.

Why does skin lose its glow in the first place?

It helps to know what you are trying to fix. In general, skin looks radiant when its surface is smooth and well hydrated, so light bounces off it evenly. When the surface dries out or the texture becomes uneven, light scatters and the face looks flat, even if nothing else has changed.

Underneath, collagen in the dermis gives skin its spring. As collagen gradually decreases with age, skin can look less plump, pores can look larger and fine lines show more. Creams work mostly at the surface, which is why many people feel they have done everything at home and still look tired.

That is the logic behind the two routes. A booster works on hydration and texture from inside the skin. An energy device such as Genius RF works on the collagen layer that holds the skin firm. Which matters more for you is something I would rather see than guess.

  • Surface dryness and rough texture: light scatters, skin looks dull
  • Fine lines: show more as hydration drops
  • Loss of collagen: skin looks less plump, pores look larger
  • Seasonal stress: sun in summer, dry air in autumn

What do Korean skin boosters actually do for glow?

The booster we use at WELLS is Rejuran HB+, a salmon-derived polynucleotide (PN) with hyaluronic acid and lidocaine. PN improves the skin's internal environment and structure, adds elasticity in the epidermis and dermis, smooths fine lines and texture, and improves hydration.

The added hyaluronic acid boosts hydration further. For dull, dehydrated skin, that combination of moisture and smoother texture is what most people are picturing when they search for Korean skin boosters for glow.

  • Hydration: improved by PN and boosted by hyaluronic acid
  • Texture and fine lines: smoother over a course
  • Comfort: lidocaine reduced post-injection pain by an average of 53% on the VAS scale compared with Rejuran Healer
  • Course: four sessions at 2–3 week intervals are recommended

What a booster does not do is tighten a softening jawline or shrink pores in a structural way. That is where energy comes in.

How does Genius RF add firmness and glow?

Genius RF Microneedling delivers energy at the depth where collagen is made. It stimulates the skin's own collagen regeneration for a natural lift with no foreign material, and it also targets enlarged pores, including the nose, and the jawline.

In the article I explained what makes it different from a one-setting-fits-all device. Genius reads the skin's condition and resistance in real time and adjusts the energy it delivers, so the energy goes where it is needed.

What is it like to have?

WELLS' anesthesia protocol controls about 80% of the usual Genius discomfort. You can generally wash your face gently and resume routine activities the same day, and we ask you to skip scrubs for 2–3 weeks. Non-sedation Air NOX is also available, so you stay awake.

Send a daylight photo without makeup and tell me what 'glow' means for you. I'll tell you whether a booster, Genius RF or both fit your skin.

Booster, energy device, or both: how do I decide?

I look at three things at consultation: how dehydrated the skin is, how much texture and how many fine lines there are, and whether firmness and pores have changed. The answer shapes the plan.

I also ask how you want to feel the week after. Some patients want the quickest visible freshness before an event, others want a slower change that builds over months. The same skin can lead to different plans depending on that answer, and both are reasonable.

How I match the concern to the treatment
Main concernWhat I usually consider first
Dull, dehydrated skin, fine linesRejuran HB+ skin booster
Enlarged pores, softening jawline, loss of firmnessGenius RF Microneedling
Dryness plus loss of firmnessA combination, timed by the dermatologist
Rough texture, pores and fine lines around the eyes and cheeksRejuran Tox

Rejuran Tox is our protocol of Rejuran HB+ (3 mL) with a skin smoothing injection in one visit, listed at ₩913,000 or ₩1,089,000 (VAT excluded) depending on the product you choose. Prices for Rejuran HB+ alone and for Genius RF are confirmed at consultation.

Who should be careful with combined treatments?

Two treatments in one plan means more decisions about energy, order and spacing. Very sensitive skin, recent procedures or an active skin condition can change what I suggest, and side effects are possible with any treatment.

At WELLS, a board-certified dermatologist handles your consultation, diagnosis and treatment, and every injection uses genuine products. If the plan does not suit your skin or your schedule, I will say so and suggest a simpler one.

Planning a glow treatment around a trip to Seoul

A booster course is four sessions at 2–3 week intervals, which is easier for people who can return. Genius RF lets you resume routine activities the same day, which suits shorter trips. Tell us your flight dates and the dermatologist will advise on timing.
