Korean skin clinic consultation: what to check before any lifting

A Seoul dermatologist on what a Korean skin clinic consultation should cover before lifting: who treats you, genuine tips, timing and price.

Why does a Korean skin clinic consultation matter more than the device?

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Sin Lee, a board-certified dermatologist and Chief Director at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. I completed my dermatology residency and board certification at Asan Medical Center, where I am an adjunct professor in the Department of Dermatology.

International patients often ask me what a Korean skin clinic consultation should look like before a lifting treatment. My answer is that the consultation is where safety is decided, long before any handpiece touches your skin.

In September 2025 I told Dong-A Edu (동아일보 교육) that with anti-aging treatments, safety has to come before the size of the change you hope for. This post turns that interview into a checklist you can use at WELLS or anywhere else.

What I said in the Dong-A Edu interview

The article started with the change of season. In autumn the air turns dry and the temperature swings between morning and afternoon, and skin under that stress shows fine lines, dryness and loss of firmness more easily. That is when interest in anti-aging treatments, and in Thermage FLX in particular, tends to rise.

Thermage FLX delivers radiofrequency energy precisely to the dermis to encourage collagen renewal. It suits skin with fine lines and dryness, rough texture and lost volume, and most people return to daily life straight away.

The warning in the article was about haste. A treatment chosen quickly, without the right checks, can lead to side effects or a result that disappoints. I listed two things to confirm first: whether genuine Thermage tips are used, and whether the dermatologist has the anatomical knowledge and clinical experience to predict how your skin will respond.

Who should see you at a Korean skin clinic consultation?

Ask who will examine you and who will treat you. At WELLS, a board-certified dermatologist consults, plans the shot count and treats you in person. The consultation and the treatment are done by the same team of dermatologists.

Ask about language as well. A consultation in English is available at the clinic, and replies on WhatsApp and Instagram are in English, so you can plan the whole visit without a translator.

You can read each doctor's background on our dermatologists page and my own profile on Dr. Won Sin Lee's page.

How do you check that Thermage tips are genuine?

Thermage tips are expensive, and that creates a temptation to cut corners. In the interview I said it matters to choose a clinic that uses genuine tips and certifies them.

  • You see the tip's ID card before we start.
  • We confirm the shot count with you before and after treatment, and use every last shot.
  • Because you stay awake, you can see the tip and the counter yourself.
  • If a tip is ever found not to be genuine, WELLS refunds ten times the treatment price.

Genuine tips and a visible shot count are the two checks I would ask of any clinic. Our Thermage MAX page shows how this works step by step.

Ask before you book

What should the consultation cover before lifting?

A careful consultation looks at the skin and the person, not only at the treatment menu. At WELLS, the plan for Thermage starts with measurement.

  • A 3D skin scan that maps where to focus the energy, and later shows the change.
  • A skin microbiome test that reads oil, moisture, barrier health and inflammation tendency, repeated a year later.
  • A conversation about your health, including whether non-sedation Air NOX suits you.
  • The shot count and the listed price, confirmed before anything starts.

Air NOX is not suitable in early pregnancy, with respiratory conditions, panic disorder or vitamin B12 deficiency. These are exactly the details a consultation is for, and they are explained on our Air NOX page.

Sometimes the honest answer is a different treatment. If the main problem is deeper sagging along the jawline, I may suggest another layer of treatment rather than more Thermage.

Red flags I would watch for at any clinic

Not every visitor will choose WELLS, and that is fine. Whichever dermatologist in Seoul you see, a few signs tell you the consultation is not doing its job.

  • The price is fixed before anyone has looked at your face.
  • Nobody can tell you who will hold the handpiece.
  • The tip is never shown, or the shot count is not confirmed with you.
  • You are offered deep sedation as the default, so you cannot see or feel what is happening.
  • Every concern is answered with the same treatment.

Anti-aging treatment safety is mostly about these small checks. They take a few minutes, and they protect both your skin and the money you are spending.

WELLS does not use deep sedation for Thermage. We use numbing cream, local anesthesia and, where it suits you, Air NOX, so you stay awake, need no fasting and can drive afterwards. Being awake is part of the safety check, because you can tell us how the heat feels.

How long until you see results after Thermage?

In the interview I stressed that skin treatments need time, unlike surgery. With Thermage FLX, changes typically begin about two weeks after treatment and can last six to fourteen months. Results vary from person to person.

That timing matters for visitors. On a short trip you will usually notice the change at home, not in Seoul. Plan your expectations around weeks, not days.
