Juvelook vs Sculptra: Same Idea, Different Depth, Different Job
Juvelook vs Sculptra: both build your own collagen, but they sit at different depths and solve different problems. Dr. Ryu explains how he decides.

Juvelook vs Sculptra: the short answer
Hello, I'm Dr. Hyo Seop Ryu, a board-certified dermatologist and Chief Director at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. I taught as a clinical instructor and assistant professor at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital.
Patients from abroad often ask me about Juvelook vs Sculptra, because the two names come up together in almost every Korean clinic menu. Some search it the other way round, as Sculptra vs Juvelook, but the question is the same: which one is right for my face?
Here is the direct answer. Sculptra is placed deep to rebuild volume and support; Juvelook sits closer to the surface to refine texture. Both work by prompting your skin to make its own collagen, so neither is a quick fill, and neither is simply a cheaper version of the other.
I explained this distinction to Medical Today (메디컬투데이) in October 2022, in an article titled 'Similar but different: check the differences between Juvelook and Sculptra before treatment'. What I said then still guides how we plan at WELLS, so this post walks through it for readers planning a trip to Seoul.
Why are Juvelook and Sculptra compared so often?
Collagen is the main structural protein of the dermis, and it declines gradually with age. As it thins, fine lines appear, the skin loses bounce and the face can look hollow in places it once looked full.
Both products respond to that loss in the same general way. Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). As the Medical Today article put it, Juvelook is built on its close chemical relative, poly-D-lactic acid, which the article called PLLA's twin. On our own treatment page we describe Juvelook as a PLA combined with hyaluronic acid, approved by the Korean FDA (KFDA).
Because the mechanism is shared, people assume the results are interchangeable. In my experience the comparison only makes sense once you ask where each one is placed and what problem you are actually trying to solve.
If you have seen the shorthand PLLA vs PDLA online, that is the chemistry behind the same comparison. The chemistry matters less to you than the practical consequence: particle size and softness decide how deep each product can safely go, and depth decides the job.

Where does each one go in the skin?
This is the heart of the Juvelook vs Sculptra question. Sculptra is injected deep, below the dermis, into the fat layer and around the supporting tissue of the face. Collagen is stimulated from that deep level, which is why it is chosen when the goal is volume and contour.
Juvelook has smaller, rounded particles and a softer feel, so it can be placed nearer the dermis. The article noted that this smaller, spherical particle is also why nodules under the skin are less of a concern with it. That makes it better suited to shallow problems than to rebuilding a hollow cheek.
| Sculptra | Juvelook | |
|---|---|---|
| Main ingredient | Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) | PLA with hyaluronic acid |
| Typical depth | Deep: fat layer and around supporting tissue | Closer to the dermis |
| Best at | Volume, contour, support | Texture, fine lines, depressed scars |
| How results appear | Gradually, as collagen builds | Scars filled at once, collagen builds after |
At WELLS we list Juvelook on our acne scar and pore treatment page, where it fills depressed scars immediately while stimulating collagen. Sculptra sits on our Sculptra page under lifting and anti-aging.
Which one suits which concern?
When I sort a consultation, I start with the concern rather than the product. Broadly, the split looks like this.
- Hollow temples, a flattened upper face, sagging mid-face or a softer jawline: Sculptra, often as Sculptra Lifting at the temples and upper face
- Depressed acne scars and uneven texture: Juvelook, frequently combined with lasers
- Fine lines and crepey texture: the article grouped these with Juvelook, because shallow problems need a shallow product
- Both volume loss and poor texture: sometimes both, in a planned order
Juvelook for acne scars is the use we list at WELLS. A depressed scar is a small, shallow defect, so a product that fills it at once and then keeps building collagen around it is a sensible fit, especially alongside laser work on the surrounding skin.
The Medical Today piece also mentioned stretch marks and dark circles under the eyes as areas where Juvelook can be used in general practice. Whether that is the right tool for your under-eye area is a decision I make face to face, after looking at the skin thickness and the shadow pattern.

Ask which one suits meHow WELLS decides between Juvelook and Sculptra

In the 2022 interview I said the most important step is finding the treatment that fits each person's skin, and that you have to predict how the face will change, not only treat what you see today. Age, sex, current skin condition and the pace of aging all feed into that prediction.
In practice that means a few fixed habits. A dermatologist consults and treats; we analyze the face in 3D before planning; and every Sculptra vial we use is genuine. Dr. Choi, Dr. Lee and I all completed Handok's Sculptra hands-on training program.
For volume, we often use our own Sculptra Lifting technique: instead of filling the area that sags, we place Sculptra at the temples and upper face to support tissue upward along the face's natural lifting vectors. One session is listed at ₩1,320,000 (VAT excluded), and the dermatologist tells you at consultation whether one session is enough.
What to expect if you travel to Seoul for either
Both products build collagen over time, so the change continues after you fly home. That is worth knowing before you plan: a collagen stimulator is not judged on the day of treatment the way a hyaluronic acid filler is.
For Sculptra, technique and amount matter, and the right placement differs between cheeks, temples and folds. For Juvelook on scars, we usually think in terms of a combined plan with lasers such as fractional picosecond treatment. In both cases your dermatologist explains the expected timeline and aftercare in the consultation before anything begins.
People looking for a collagen stimulator in Korea sometimes book one product and only later realize the other would have served them better. Asking the depth question first saves that second trip.
If price is your main question for Sculptra, our separate guide on what decides the Sculptra Korea price covers sessions and vials. For a fuller look at the Korean-made option, see our Juvelook Korea guide.

Plan my visit on WhatsAppQuestions to ask any clinic before you choose
Whatever you decide, a few questions protect you. They are the same ones I raised in the Medical Today article, simply turned into a checklist.
- Who performs the injection: a board-certified dermatologist, or someone else?
- Is the product genuine, and can I see the vial?
- Why this product for my concern, and why this depth?
- How will you assess my face before planning?
- What timeline should I expect after I leave Korea?
A clinic that answers these clearly is usually a clinic that plans carefully. You can read more about the team on our dermatologists page.
