Potenza treatment explained: how microneedle RF works at WELLS

What a Potenza treatment actually does, why we use it inside a melasma protocol, who it suits, and when another microneedle RF is the better fit.

What is a Potenza treatment?

Hello, I'm Dr. Won Sin Lee, a board-certified dermatologist and chief director at WELLS Clinic in Apgujeong, Seoul. I completed my dermatology residency at Asan Medical Center, where I am now an adjunct professor of dermatology. Patients often ask me what a Potenza treatment actually does, and whether it's the same thing they've seen advertised for pores, scars or tightening.

Potenza is a microneedle RF device: fine needles carry radiofrequency energy below the skin surface, so heat is delivered into the deeper layer rather than across the top. At WELLS, we use it as the second step of MELA Triple Toning, a protocol developed at our clinic for melasma that keeps coming back.

So the honest answer has two parts: what the device does in general, and why I put it inside a pigment treatment. This explainer covers both, plus who it suits and when I would choose a different microneedle RF instead.

How Potenza microneedling works in the skin

Microneedle RF works by giving the skin a controlled micro-injury. The needles create tiny channels, the RF energy adds heat at depth, and as the skin repairs itself, new tissue fills in.

That is the same principle behind most regenerative skin treatments: stimulate the skin's own repair rather than add something to it. What makes Potenza microneedling different from a surface laser is where the energy lands, below the epidermis, in the layer where the skin environment is built.

There is a catch I explain to every patient. Done too strongly, needling and fractional treatments can leave the skin dry, so the energy should be gentle and appropriate for your skin, not set to the maximum.

Surface problems vs deep problems

It helps to separate what skin changes happen near the surface from what happens deep down. Rough texture, enlarged pores, fine lines and irregular pigment sit closer to the surface; loss of elasticity and a softening jawline come from the dermis, the SMAS and the fat layer.

Microneedle RF belongs to the first group of tools. It refines the skin and its environment, but it is not a lifting treatment, and I wouldn't use it to replace one. Surface care also works best as steady refinement along the skin's renewal cycle, not as one heavy session.

Why I use Potenza inside a melasma protocol

Most people think of melasma as a pigment problem only, so they treat it with laser toning alone. Toning breaks melanin into fine particles, and for many people the pigment fades, then returns.

Recent research points to something underneath: senescent fibroblasts, collagen loss and a weakened basement membrane in melasma skin. That is why we treat the skin environment, not only the pigment, and Potenza is the part of the protocol that reaches that deeper layer.

In other words, the Potenza step isn't there to tighten or lift. It's there to renew the skin that the pigment sits in, so the result of the toning has a better base to hold on to.

What a Potenza treatment session looks like at WELLS

Every step is performed by a board-certified dermatologist.

A MELA Triple Toning session starts with a dermatologist consultation. A board-certified dermatologist examines your skin, confirms that the protocol suits your skin type, and sets the plan before anything starts.

  • Step 1, Pico or Clarity toning: laser toning breaks pigment into fine particles
  • Step 2, Potenza RF microneedling: energy delivered deeper renews the skin environment
  • Step 3, WELLS skin-brightening enzyme + LDM: an enzyme developed in-house is applied and driven into the skin with LDM ultrasound

All three steps happen in one visit. The listed price is ₩770,000 (VAT excluded) per session, and it covers the whole protocol; I've broken down what is and isn't included in our Potenza RF microneedling cost guide.

Melasma is managed over time rather than fixed in a day. The number of sessions and the interval between them are set by the dermatologist at consultation.

Who Potenza suits, and when I choose Genius RF instead

The protocol that includes Potenza was designed for pigment that has come back before. It's worth checking your skin against that before you plan around it:

  • Melasma that returns after toning
  • Uneven, dull skin tone
  • Sun spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Many people searching for Potenza aren't thinking about melasma at all. They want smaller pores, smoother texture or a firmer jawline, and for that goal the microneedle RF we list on its own is Genius RF, which places energy where collagen is made and targets enlarged pores, including the nose, and the jawline.

For acne scars, microneedle RF is one tool among several. On our acne scar and pore page it is combined with mosaic fractional laser, Aquapeel and the Clarity dual laser, depending on the scar type and pore condition.

When someone asks me for Potenza by name, I ask what they want to see change. Pigment that keeps returning points me to MELA Triple Toning; pores and a softening jawline point me to Genius RF.

Potenza before and after: what changes, and how fast

When people look up Potenza before and after, they usually want to know how quickly the skin changes. Because the treatment works through the skin's own renewal, change tends to be gradual, and with melasma it is something we manage over a course rather than judge after one visit.

What happens between sessions matters as much as the session itself. These are the habits I ask every patient to keep:

  • Apply sunscreen thoroughly every day; long-term UV exposure is what brings irregular pigment up in the first place
  • Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and never rub hard when removing makeup
  • Don't exfoliate daily, and moisturise well afterwards when you do
  • Avoid smoking and drinking, which work against any treatment result

Individual results vary and side effects are possible, which is exactly why every treatment starts with a dermatologist consultation. If a clinic promises you a fixed result from one session of microneedle RF, ask how they know.
